Should that be located a Bill Dempasy's then it might be sprayer related. He used to have some Callair stuff lying around.

It is definitely a spar from a Beech 18. Exactly which type of Beech is hard to say without a closer look. There will be a small data plate on the right side vertical tube running between the wing attach fittings. It should give the pertinent details from where it came.

Here is a photo of a spar truss that we removed from an AT-11 because it was rusted through from the inside. We are replacing it with a spar from a later Beech as the 1946 and later spars were stronger and used thicker walled tubing.

If you want to part with the spar truss let me know as I could use it for what it was intended for.

Thanks,
Taigh

Although the mystery has been solved, here's a shot of an AT-10 spart just for fun..

Taken in the NMUSAF Restoration Hangar around '95 or so.

And as she looks today..

Yeah, you win a vacation to one of the motels across the street from TYS on "I'll Kill Ya" Blvd, and a taco from Taco Bell!

So there is hope for my AT-10, its' not much worse than the before pictures of the USAF museaum one. Now that they have had all that practice I wonder if they would like to trade something and do it again?

Actually, when I took that tour they had some original outer wing panels. If I remember correctly, the tour guide said they would use the best ones in the restoration, then destroy the rest!

Yes I have heard that horror story before and was just wishing it wasn't true. What a bunch of idiots. I bet they say they didn't want the liability of someone trying to make a flyer out of them. What about another museaum, like for instance AIR AND SPACE!!!!!!!!!!!! What beauracratic self serving idiots. Yes I would say it to their faces too

It's been a long time, but I think the tour guide flat out told us the museum planned to destroy any spare parts so they would have the only restored AT-10 (but that may just be my assumption.)

I remember some years back talking to Maurice "Mr. Ford Tri-Motor" Hovious. When he first started rebuilding Fords, he needed a way to make the corrugated sheet metal skin. He found a guy in California who had an original set of dies, but the jerk refused to let Mr. Hovious use them, because he said if another Ford was restored, it would make his less valuable. Mr. Hovious eventually went to a grain silo manufacturer who had corrugated sheet metal dies of the correct dimensions, and was happy to run some aluminum through them (I believe Mr. Hovious has since acquired a set of dies of his own.)

I had to chuckle when Gary mentioned that he got some corrugated sheet from Mr. Hovious to use as floorboards in AM027.

Steve that would be the only thing that would make the museum look like bigger idiots than the liability issue. I am going up there Sept 27 and hopefully I will hear for myself what their reasoning was (is). Does anyone know what kind of accommadations they have at the Dayton county jail?

Sorry N3NJeff, you will not be "up grading" to the Hilton...ask Paris about the accomodations at the L.A. Hilton.....It is interesting how some farmers have preserved aviation relics...they always seem to find a use for everything...and don't dare ever throw things away........In fact, the only reason my wife lets me hang onto some old Beech 18 cowlings, is that she thinks it looks nice around the base of our plum trees....Gary
