haven't quite a few been converted to standard A36 configuration?? i know I have heard of this happening. Would make for a much more valuable airplane $$$$$$.

I can't imagine why someone would convert one to A36 specs.
New engine, cowl, interior, airframe repairs, windows/back doors...etc, etc. I'm not sure they'd save any money over buying a used A36 (unless the airframe was free and in great shape).

In order to be converted into an A-36, it would have to be demonstrated that it is equivelant to an A-36, and would have be recognised as such by the FAA and the manufacturer.

I can say for a fact that Beech was extremely reluctant to officially (and even un officially) admit that the aircraft were ever manufactured or ever existed when we were putting 22QU together and trying to get it licensed.

I am in agreement that the cost to convert a QU-22 into any civilian version of it's basic design would far outweigh the cost (and simplicity) of just aquiring a presently airworthy example of a real A-36. It was a bastardized version at best, and used parts from many different Beech platforms. Believe me, we had tried to get it into any form of standard category, with no luck.

NX22QU just won Best Vietnam era A/C at AIRSHO 2011 and (by shameless plug) that silly black plane beside it won the same at AIRSHO 2010 (the black one was not at AIRSHO 2011 so we did not compete against each other ) I'm glad the pilots/owners are friends

Four QU-22A and Five QU-22B aircraft are currrently on the FAA registry, but I don't recognize the registrations of any of them in particular.

I know that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univeristy in Daytona Beach had one while I was there working on my A&P from 1985-1987. It was used along with an old Cessna 310 and 337 as maintenance training airframes and during that time, it was somewhat restored to a basic A36 configuration - at least someone removed the hump from the engine cowling for the GTSIO-520 prop reduction spur gear part of the engine case. I think it was fiberglass and they just hacked it off and glassed a new smooth patch over the hole. I have no idea what ever happened to that particular QU-22 or if ERAU even still has it.

I also heard once upon a time that Landon Studer of Triple S Aviation in Addison, TX (or his family) had a Beech QU-22 as well. In addition to his involvement with the CAF B-24/B-29 squadron, Landon was also a member of the USCG Aux. Squadron in Houston and he was flying (or at least in) the so-called "Aleutian Goose" that crashed at the Al Ain International Airport in the United Arab Emirates at the end of last February. I have no idea what became of their QU-22 either - it could be that they sold it a while ago and it is one of the ones still registered elsewhere in the US.

NX22QU is the one that Landon was part of. I'm glad to hear his partners have kept flying it Karen.

Landon's brother, Brian, and his father are flying it and will be trying to participate in some of the Texas shows next year.

I believe Karen is talking about the Midland Airsho, not the the wings over Houston airshow that did cancel the Vietnam display.


The A&P school I went to in southern AZ had two of them and I think one was runnable but can't remember. I always thought it was cool looking!! Glad for those that are flyable and hope to see the Tx one some day.
Will it be @ Alliance this year?

I do not know if the QU-22 will be a Alliance. Over the winter, I'm going to try to give Brian some scheduling advice for next year's season. It's a very interesting aircraft and should be displayed.
