so why didn't the Marines do this to some of the other islands in these chains.., would have saved 10's of 1000's of lives!

Peleliu and Tarawa for example.

Forward supply and repair bases, testing the Japanese defenses and Allied tactics and equipment and, this is the one my Father-in-law (veteran of Siapan, Tinnian and Iwo-Jima) stresses, practice for operation Downfall (he was training for the first wave and I love the bomb).

There were epic fights between McArthur and Nimitz on what to invade and what to bypass.

Especially considering only a few people knew about the atomic bomb. Dad-in-law, and his marine comrades knew it would be bad and figured none of them would be coming home. And they lived their lives that way.
