Could be an 'E' with the top turret removed, probably not unusual in a training unit. Sailor, do you have any kind of timeline for your Dad's service? That would help.

Steve,

My best guess would be he was in the Army Air Corps from 1944 -1946.

The 17 looks to have had nose art at one time and its location on the bird looks familiar. Also the black panel behind the 002 looks like it may have covered up a lot of bomb missions possibly making her a south pacific veteran. Most of the south pacific b-17s came back to a stateside training sqdn in new mexico, I think alamagordo?

I'm not familiar with US protocol, but I also read 'cpl', and I don't think officers would have needed at that chit from the Yeoman, surely?

It's an E model, without the top turret.
No extra cockpit window, plus it has the
eyebrow windows.

And the framed plexiglas nose. Dang, I wish we could read the S/N. If it was a South Pacific B-17, I NEED that number.

Sailor,

Did your Dad ever mention what part of the country he did his various types of training in? Any mention of bases by name?

All my mother remembers was he spent some time in Pensacola. The 24 hour pass I posted is from Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 22-1 which had an address at the Fleet Post Office in New York. I would guess he had to have been in the New York area to take a 24 hour pass to Boston.
