I've seen F-101s that had enormous US insignia decal on the forward fusalage. The decals were preperforated to eliminate air bubbles.

oh yes they did!!! i have 1 mounted on a board. believe it or not..... those decals are rated to mach speeds!! i got mine from aviator's world in mojave back in the 90's, they were govt surplus. as for aviator's world they are now out of business.

Decals have been used for years. Perfect example -

KittyHawk 737

That entire livery is decals The base coat of white and blue is the only paint on the plane. Everything else (lettering, "squiggles", N-Numbers, warning stuff, and flags) are decals.

They were also used on the older 'Kitty Hawk' that we are more interested in here. Most of the instructional stencils were decals. The AVG emblem was also a self adhesive sticker shipped to China and applied in the field.
