I found the mag. in question (paper recycling time!). The photo
of the Bacon T-6 is on the back cover of the latest EAA Warbirds
rag. The caption for the photo says:

"The Gordon Israel-designed Bacon Super T-6, N66J (44-82028)
has been sitting at Whiteman Airport, Pacoima, Calif., for as long as
most people can remember. The Super T-6 boasted a cruising speed
of 216 mph versus 170mph of a stock T-6. Photo by J. G. Handleman"

Doesn't the Bacon Super T-6 still sit at Whiteman Airpark in Los Angeles? It is still regd. to Bill and Betsy Leasure of Northridge, CA.

OK here is the story that I was told about this airplane and why is is sitting at Whittman.
The owner is (was) a cop (policeofficer). Apparently he had a side buisness which was going into Mexico as hitman (really). Well he finally got caught and is now in jail. The airplane is still owned by him (or his family) and has just sat there rotting into the ground.
Now before everyone goes nuts and starts hammering me. It is just the story I have heard from differnt people (who have no connection to one another).
P.S. How do you post pictures I have a couple of pictures of the Bacon Super T-6 and also of the T-6 that was converted into a Biplane.

Found this photo on http://1000aircraftphotos.com/. Was the plane used for a movie, or are the colors put on for any other reason? There was a photo in Air Classics or something some years back where the plane was green. Is that how it is now?

And you're actually quite right about this guy. Found this on the net regarding the book they made about him. And the rights have been sold to HBO. Should have made the Bacon airworthy for the film then... :roll:

On another forum there was a guy posting a lot of ramblings from Whiteman over the years. One part included the fact that Leasure's wife still pays the tie-down 18 years after her husband went up the river. Too bad it is just sitting there!

I flew into Whitman Airport today. I took a walk over and looked at the Bacon Super T-6. It looks really sad. The tires are completly flat, struts just rust balls, most of the fabric has holes punched into it, the engine is just one ball of rust, canopy completly ruined. There isn't even any oil dripping from the engine. I never realized how modified that airplane really is. If someone didn't tell you it is a t-6 you wouldn't hardly realize it at first look. Someone put a lot of work into that thing once. I will take a flight over there again and take some pictures.

Is there anything fundamentally wrong with this aircraft, does it just need a complete restoration, or are there chunks that have been cut?

I looked at this plane last year and took some photos. It looks good from the road, but it is a hollow shell with few components. The wing attach angles are cut and there is a lot of corrosion in the wings and center section. Some of the external panels are good, and there were some parts I would like to have had off of it, but the condition does not support the price, especially when I would have had to move it back to Texas. He was not interested in selling parts and the price was non negotiable. If anyone decides they just have to have it, I would love to trade a few parts with you!

Last time I tried this the lights dimmed and my computer crashed...here are some photos of the Escondido T-6. I took close to 100 photos, so if there is anything in particular you would like to see let me know. Notice it has the G style canopies BDK and Greg are looking for.
