But each time I stand next to an aircraft doing a run-up, I make note of note standing forward and to the right of it! That is if the engine is clockwise turning.

I saw the preview a couple of weeks ago. If I had not seen the preview, I probably would have gone to see the movie. Having seen it... not a chance. It is all just so fakey-doo. I was struck by the thought of how we have come full circle. When you watch movies from the '30s, one of the detractions is the fake models. The ground breaking movies for realism were Tora and Battle of Britain, and as camera technology got better, we were treated to some really awesome footage. Now, we have completed the circle, as CGI has made it possible to produce totally unrealistic, blatantly fake scenes. I look forward to reviews from those willing to take a chance...

Having read Elleston Trevor's book when I was a kid, and having seen the original film, I've wondered: could such a plane actually fly? Looking at the mockup in the movie, it seems like (a) it would be way too nose heavy and (b) the ailerons were too wide. I imagine that was why the other Phoenix (part T-6, part Twin Beech) was built?

On the subject of airplanes in movies, I just went to the excellent film Motorcycle Diaries....and towards the end of the film there is some cool footage of a DC-3 taking off, into the sunset, with equisite sound of those engines. Also the two characters are seen standing in a hangar with a Convair and an Albatross for quite awhile. I think the DC-3 was from Brazil as it's listed at the end as belonging to an Aero Clubbe Do Rio Grande Do Sul.

I thought that Mantz used BT-13/Beech 18 "bits" for the Phoenix?

WONDER IF THEM MOVIES GOING TO BE IN EUROPE BEFORE THE SUMMER 2005 ?

From all I've read, it was just a canopy-less BT-13/15 with a squared-off tail and dorsal fin to make it look more like the C-82. I've never heard of Beech 18 parts being used and after seeing the plane, I don't see anything that looks Beech-ish.

They brought in the Vultee after the real "Phoenix" crashed on landing, killing Paul mantz.
If you see the film, I caught the ending over the weekend) you'll note when you see the second "Phoenix" fly, it's considerably shorter than the first plane.

I don't know who flew the Vultee since I understand that frank Tallman was in the hospital following a go-cart accident that would eventually cost him his leg.
