Django,
You guys are good!
The radio call tag should read 413-761.
When we got it back from the engraver it was wrong and didnt have time to change it before Oshkosh.

That wasn't it either. That's easily fixed though.
Who made the type stencils that have been painted over? A sign shop?

Not sure what you mean by "type stencils".
Thanks,
Mike

Sorry, that wasn't clear. Who made these stencils? (Type referred to the typeface used.)

I am guessing then you are referring to the type font.
This is correct as to the factory applied stamps by NAA. It is a particular font. Other areas, ususally field applied, like those up in the front of the cowling are stencils.
I hope that helps.

That particular typeface is the correct typeface? Do you have a pic from a manual that you based it on?
I ask because it's resemblence to the typeface Lithos is striking... which wasn't designed until 1989.
Sorry for being so picky on what looks to me to be one of the greatest nods to authenticity I've ever seen. I work with type though everyday.

No problem. That type font as I recall was made in the late 30's? I've got some photos of it on some NOS North American Aviation parts. I'll ask Jack to see if he can post some for me. I've not yet graduated to the level to post on Wix!

Just so you don't think I'm a lunatic...

Here is Lithos. There are some tiny differences in the J, C and A, but it is really really close.

Hey Mike, you and your team just keep putting beautiful airplanes out there and it sure is appreciated !!! Can you give any details as to your next project and when it might take to the skies ? By the way my 1/32 scale decals for HJGB showed up in the mail today and with these great photo's posted for reference, I know what I'm starting on this weekend...

Maybe this should be Jack Cook's avatar!

Hello Mike, great job on the Mustang, sensational

My question is why wasn't the numbers put on the cowlings, the reference numbers where they are the same side by side? I would also like a little insight into those numbers and did not every one that came down the line have them? I like you haven't graduated to posting pics yet either(many people want me to) so hopefully the question is clear.

Thanks for that MKD. Our next project hopefully will be ready in 1-1/2 -2 years. Probably will not be like HJGB in the stock dept but will be more of a sport mustang like Daddy's Girl or Red Dog.
Cant wait to see your model! Maybe you'll be able to post some shots of it when it's done unlike me.
Thanks again,
Mike

Hi Steve,
The numbers if you didnt already know were the last 4 or sometimes 5 digits of the aircraft S/N. To the best of my knowledge they were not applied at the factory but rather in theater to keep fairings seperate during periods of maintenance. The reason we didnt apply them to HJGB was the simple fact that we couldnt find any photographic evidence showing them. In fact we didnt see hardly any on the 20thFG airplanes as I recall. Some groups seemed to use them more than others. For instance the 352nd seemed to use them liberally.
I hope that answers your questions.
Thanks again!
Mike
