This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

i SAW A SHOW AWHILE BACK AND THEY TALKED ABOUT THE rUSSIANS SENDING BALLOONS OVER THE usa COLLECTING DATA AND WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT UNTIL ONE WAS RECOVERED(darn caps!) This supposedly explained a bunch of sightings during that time. Seems that a baloon a 70k ft shows up very well at night. go figger!

I saw a UFO once... and then I described it to someone in aviation and they showed me a picture of the Beechcraft Starship... and there in that picture was my UFO!

My guess is most sightings are military projects, just look at all the sightings that turn out to be the B-2, or the SR-71 many years ago.
Once, I happened to be channel surfing and saw a show where there was a guy theorizing that UFOs are actually time machines from the future and that "we" are obeserving "our" past civilizations. And that really only made me thing of Doc Brown..."Where we're going, we don't need roads"

Versatile, 70,000 feet is 13 1/4 miles high! It is hard to believe anyone could see a balloon that far up, especaily at night.

As I posted back in January:
there was an article in a late '50s issue of Reader's Digest that featured an "official" statement to the effect of "Don't worry about those UFO sightings - they're a wonderful new invention that the government is going to reveal to everybody soon..."
We're still waiting...

No problem Bill. That's how they travel faster than light - one minute they are in 'England' the next, 'Canada'!

great topic!
I was contacted by a lady whose great uncle "made" a UFO. He and a buddy took the time and parts out of a broken jukebox, crafted a big disk and then, covertly, created a "crash site" in the neighbor lady's vegetable garden!
This got EVERYONE'S attention - the street was cordoned off, the USAF sent investigators and they carefully packed it up and carried it away to Hill AFB and told everyone not to worry or ask questions. All this occurred in the early 50's as I recall.
She contacted me because they were trying to see if the creation still existed and someone somewhere told her that the thing had been taken to Wendover - she was hoping it was in our museum. Boy would that be a cool thing to have on display!

Not even that long ago....
A few years back they flew a B2 over the Northrop plant at Hawthorn & the local police received something like 400 calls about a UFO....

Blueharma, If I saw that high altitude silouette, especaily with the contrails, I would have thought some kind of plane.
The sightings that often remain Unidentified, I don't think have obvious jet contrails. Also the most puzzling ones seem to be when something is seen by many people from different places, perhaps even on radar, and it doesn't behave like a normal plane. It may be reported as being able to hover, then speed off very fast and/or make right angle turns all silently. I am not an expert in the UFO field, but as I recall the sightings often mention that the object did not make noise, even at low altitude. Anyone who was at Oshkosh can tell you a Harrier is far from silent, especially in hover.

Bill you are right... but not everyone is as wise...

Martin, that chart was really funny
Personally, I like to think that any sufficiently advanced civilization capable of traveling hundreds of light years to Earth would appreciate the value of a go-around if the landing wasn't looking good. I imagine that they would have something better to do than hack up the livestock and vandalize corn fields once they landed, too.
And what's with all the probing? Is this planet on the Uranus Institute of Proctology's final exam study list or something?
The whole UFO thing seems far fetched to me. It's not that I discount the possibility of extraterrestials...I just think that the first sign of an alien encounter would be a bit less like E.T. happily munching Reeses Pieces and a bit more like like Montezuema exclaiming "Oh, crap, another ship full of Conquistadors!"

I am a pilot for a UAV company. We use weather balloons to take the plane up to heights greater than 70K.....I can assure you that it is visible to the naked eye at that altitude during daylight. The envelope glows very brightly.
Not sure about night...we've got some night ops coming up, I'll let you know. Maybe with a full moon?
