I think that I was a crew member on the aircraft in the background in picture 2. Where was that taken.

Tootsie was a regular at many airshows in So Cal in the 90's. I'll see if I can find any pics.

If that is C-123 664, then I was there.

Does anyone have or seen photo's of when John Marshall buzzed the Florida Gators football game in I believe 1985 with "Carol Jean"... I was told it was the flight when he was on his way to Dulles International after donating the airplane... I've never seen the footage, but I heard the camera's at the top of the stadium filmed the tops of the wings !!!
This occured many years before the endzones got built up to what they are now...

Feature Stories
This one's for the not so old timers out there... Remember in 1985 on November 16th when Kentucky was playing the Florida Gators? During the game what appeared to be a WWII plane virtually swooped into the stadium, stunning everyone and becoming a legend in Florida's history. The plane, a B-25 named Carol Jean, is now in custody of the Smithsonian and will be on display soon. Read on for the details...

Here's an excerpt from the Smithsonian's website about the Carol Jean buzzing the stadium:

In 1985 Marshall read of NASM's interest in acquiring a B-25 and decided that the bomber was ready for permanent retirement. Two days before he delivered the Mitchell to the Museum, Marshall decided to end his chapter in the history of this airplane with a sensational finale. In the afternoon of Saturday, November 16, 1985, with several friends as crew, Marshall buzzed low over the University of Florida football stadium during a home game against Kentucky. Seventy-two thousand fans witnessed Carol Jean pass the length of the field just above the light poles.

Al Alsobrook, vice president for university relations, compared Marshall's pass in the B-25 to a similar buzz job carried out years earlier by a military jet pilot. "All I remember [about the jet]," he said," is that I was scared quicker and it was over quicker." The flight stirred complaints to the Federal Aviation Administration. "My phone rang for 2 ½ hours," said Fred Williams, an FAA airworthiness inspector. "There were many, many people who were irate."

Marshall said there was "no malicious intent. . . It was a perfect day. We made several passes [away from the stadium] and the airplane felt good. We felt good, and it all fell together. . . It was a last hurrah - the airplane is going to the Smithsonian. She had a home in Florida, and we wanted to say goodbye."

On Monday, November 18, 1985, Marshall landed at Dulles Airport and taxied Carol Jean into Smithsonian custody.

You can read the full story here as well as view a full sized photo of the plane that made tradition at Florida.

Wow, did Marshall get away with that in the above story of the B-25 buzzing? What did the FAA do to him? Did he lose his ticket? I would shudder to think what the FAA would do today to someone who did that. It wouldn't surprise me if they permanently grounded a pilot who pulled such a stunt in today's post 9-11 environment.

Today? They'd shoot him down first and THEN pull his license!

Thank God for big government, huh? How did America survive for all those years without endless beaurocracy?

Yes sir, he did get his ticket pulled, but I'm not sure for how long... Maybe that explains why he then got rid of his J-3 & T-6...

Wow, I would sure love to see video or pictures of that buzzing! Since it was a college football game, does anyone know if it was televised or perhaps recorded?

First, thanks Waco, Rich, Holedigger and Noisee for these great photos.

Wacoykc, do you have any more info on that first Billy (Berlin Express); it looks like an early model due to the tailcone. It also looks like it has a P-61 nose cone! I couldn't locate it in the Warbird directory. Thanks for anything you can add.
