Here is a link to a description of where each sub was during the attack, now I just need to find a map describing which pier is which, and we should know which sub is your Father's. It appears to be Narwhal or Dolphin by it's position to the pier.

I remember seeing that photo of the Vals from the B-17 (#27) in a book when I was a kid. The caption said that the Japanese pilots must have thought the photographer's camera was a gun, as they veered off whenever he pointed it at them.

I notice one photo shows a B-17E..was the flight from the States composed of both D and E models, or were there some E's already at Pearl?

Sure would like to know the numbers of those subs in #52. Could be one my father was on.

Mudge the curious

The boat in the photograph is the Narwal SS-167. Only two boats had that profile, Nautilus and Narwal.

Notice the built-up deck, like a table, amidships.

I only see one sub in that photo. The object just to the right of the flag may be another subs bridge seen from the stern, but I don't think it is.

Did any of the B-17's go on to fly into combat later in the war ? Or were they all write off's ?

Reportedly 14 of the 24 B-17 there that day were destroyed, so I would imagine that they were out hunting bear shortly (chasing shadows as the attack fleet was long gone).Clark in the Philippines was hit worse, though that bird "Swoose" rose from the ashes and survives today.

Thanks Holedigger and cozmo. You caused me to do some "in depth" research.
Since there were only 4 (5) subs at Pearl that day, my brothers and I (or maybe just me) have been living all these years believing my father (and his sub) were there on Dec. 7.
After a bit of research (which should have been done long ago) I find that the USS Pollack (SS180) was on her way from Mare Island to Pearl at the time of the attack and didn't reach Pearl until Dec. 9.
I now have no one to ask about the time line of my father's WWII record as no one who might know is still living. I'll have to ask my little brother if he knows anything. Problem is, I was only 6-10 during the war and he was 4-8.
Our memories could be influenced by what we wanted to happen instead of what actually occurred.
Oh well...the research will give me something to do.

Mudge the chagrined

ps. I took my parents to Hawaii in '69. First time my father had been there since the Arizona Memorial was dedicated. He couldn't bring himself to go out to the Memorial. First time I ever saw tears in his eyes.

The B-17 flight from the mainland on Dec 7th composed of 4 B-17C's and 8 B-17E's of the 38th and 88th Recon squadrons. All the E models were fresh from the factory and did not have any markings on them.

This is one of those B-17C's that was from that flight.

Thanks, Nathan

Looks like that C (as well as the famous burned-in-half one) had been upgraded to D standard. All C's in the AAF inventory were upgraded when thd D was introduced..the only noticable outer difference was the addition of cowl flaps.

I'm planning to make take a tour of the NMUSAF restoration hangar next month..can't wait to get a first hand look at the world's only surviving "shark tail" Fort!
