Interesting concept, but what would have been the point? The turbo-chargers already gave the P-38 the altitude capabalities lacking in the other other Allison powered aircraft, and IIRC the Lightning has some airspeed retrictions related to the tail feathers that would negate much of an increase in speed.

Still, the thought of two Griffons with contra-props on a P-38 is attractive.

Wasn't the Xp58 basically an upsized '38 to fly with the slightly larger than a Griffon experimental Allisons? Given that a Merlin is quite a bit heavier than an Allison already, I don't know the you could get Griffons on a '38, even for a Reno racer setup. Might be some really long boom extensions to counterweight it. Would be a mean airplane though.
