This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I think that the Col. was working on one along with several others...

Too bad they couldn't get either "H" to the GML. I know that Mike Coutches son was supposed to be there. Bummer.

Doug;
Thx very much for the pix. The 'H' does indeed currently fly! Might you know who was the pilot? I did not recognize him.
Thx,

Vlado, the pilot was Bill Whittington.

Zane, a little tip from a fellow moderator of a couple of other boards... if you have a message to communicate, simply posting links to other threads is NOT the way to do it. If you have something to say, just say it.

I know about the Whittingtons from their racing days, but don't know much about what aircraft they were involved with... and frankly, I don't give a crap about their sordid past, nor the penalty they paid for their illegal activities. It's done, they served their sentences and their debt to society is paid, so let's all move on and talk about some got-damn airplanes.

Yeah, the H model is definitely homely.

Imritger, there are people among the WIX folks that do like to read and know deeper than just whether something has a dash 1 or 1a carb.

If you don't like the topic, why is it so hard for you to just skip it and not read it? Or if you do read it and don't agree, you can post your own opinion or even better the facts that might support your view.

There are those on WIX who feel like adults, and don't feel we need Big Brother to shield our eyes from the harsh world. We don't live in fear that someone might shake our values by something they write. THINKING AND LEARNING are not scary words. There is nothing better for truth than the light of day in full view of public opinion. And as for the legal aspect, I believe I am correct that courts have held the site is not responsible for the opinions posted by others. And the story about the Whitingtons has been written before.

I think all of us appreciate WIX and want it to prosper. But some of us would like it to grow in scope, in importance, and not just be the same topics, the same view that is like watching a fish swim inside a barrel.

There are sports that I like, skiing, football, and some I have no interest in like curling. But I don't go to the curling rink to tell others not to watch it.

Homebuilt look? The windshield might be contributing to that effect. The Rheinschild 'D' Mustang had a similar windshield.

The windshield contributes for sure, but it is just one factor. The nose, the tail, the gear doors... all the proportions look just plain wrong if all you've ever seen are D models. The D is a beautifully classic design. The H looks like someone was trying to build their own D Model from scratch.

Vlado have you ever flown an H? Does it feel any different? I think the more pointed nose, and the tall tail makes the H look larger in the middle and a little less in proportion.

Isn't the H half of a P-82?

Whoa, hold on there newt... We're on the same page here.

Previous to these threads, I knew very little about the Whittingtons' involvement in the warbird community. I like learning about warbirds and the folks who are intimately involved with them... otherwise I wouldn't spend hours putzing around through these threads. So I'm quite interested to know what Bill and Don own (especially that P-51H). What I find completely unnecessary, however, are veiled threats regarding closed threads. It was pretty obvious that those "threats" arose from previous threads which devolved into discussions about what landed Bill and Don in trouble with the Federales back in the 80s. They served their time and paid their debt, so why not focus on the better aspects of their warbird involvement? That doesn't seem like too tall an order, does it?

Cheers,

Lynn
