Apparently many other kinds of hats are available on carriers.... at least among Hawkeye squadrons.... (especially 2.16 thru 2.40...)

Yes, that's a tradition that USAF guys (sometimes) have adopted and perform on 'Battle of Britain Day'.

Strangely, at my squadron here in England we don't do that. Weird.

Obviously hats are for Americans - Full sets are RN.

I was refering to the British custom of the pall bearers wearing toppers with a black scarf draped over the back side of the brim-

Indeed you were. I think they feel the beard (last officer on the left) added a certain solemnity to the event. ;)
