I've never heard 'em called 'turkeys' before. Whydat? I thought they were considered pretty good birds.

'Cuz the were big, slow and ungainly. Especially in the pattern. A friend who flew them in the 50s said that "Turkey time in your log book was like VD in you medical record!". But they were indeed good airplanes.

Tomcats were also called Turkeys. Not sure why but maybe cause the original engine sucked

Thanks Jack,
Never seen an Avenger with an underwing tank before (at least that's what I think I am seeing - no, NIOT the radar pods in the wing).
Ever used for a mission? Only for ferry flights?
Any serious answer much appreciated.
John

I have seen a picture of one of our (RNZAF) TBFs with the same tank (tanks? I presume there was one on the other side) taken in New Zealand not long after we got them. The caption mentioned they were removed shortly after due to them causing buffeting to the flaps when they were lowered.
