That is very trrue. The base CO's have a lot of pull with keeping planes at bases. However Gen. Metcalfe despite all the stories you read about him, is not afraid to step in and take the plane and move it elsewhere if he thinks better care can be given to it by doing so. I would say there is a chance of moving that B-24 to the YAM. It needs approached in the right manner. Storming in the door demanding the B-24 and that you be allowed to fly it will not do it. I am 100% sure of that.

I think that once the YAM gets a building up, they need to start talking to the NMUSAF about the B-24 at Barksdale. By having the building to place it in, you now are showing that the aircraft preservation of the aircraft is going to improve. That can be a big advantage. Forget asking about flying it(atleast for now). Just work on getting it there and indoors and restoring it. Maybe down the road things will change on the flying of aircraft onloan from the NMUSAF, maybe not. But atleast you will have a Ford built B-24.

I think that is their best hope. That aircraft will NEVER fly again, and we ALL need to accept that. Restored and indoors is the best any of us can hope for on a NMUSAF owned bird. That is just the reality of it.

Sure, Charles Lindbergh flew the plane... but Tom Rutledge built the engine!

I was lucky enough to be asked to haul three truck loads of B-24 parts to the YAF....What an adventure! On the first load, I picked up a large portion of parts from March AFB, including some parts of the mock wooden B-24...I thought it was a little cheezy, but it was still pretty cool...I didn't ever see the fuselage part of it, but heard that it had a different paint scheme on each side...What I hauled was the engine nacells, props, and tail feathers from the mock-up.

These are a couple of years old, but give an idea of the variety of B-24/PB4Y parts the YAM has accumulated. Is the project still in the same hangar? I heard the flying aircraft got evicted.
