Favorite Aviation/Warbird Restaurants

OK, I dont know if any of these places are still open but here it goes!

Amelia's Canteen, Rutland State Airport, Vermont.......... Started by a friend of mine who was killed a few yrs ago. WW2 theme with pictures and a large collection of leather jackets on display. Hanging on the wall, a prop for a C-47.

101ABN in Nashville TN, had a rotted DC-3 painted in invasion stripes out back, but a very nice M5 Stuart tank out front.

91st BG Ft Laud, Fla...........last I knew was renamed "justins by the runway"

Think was 95th BG in West Palm Beach Fla. 4 star Lunch Buffet!!!

Now my old hang out, if its still around. Mayday's Wreck Bar at N. Perry Airport, Hollywood Fla. Was one of the last ones at closing time many nights...........could write a book with a lot of them.

Seriously. The Brits write about their aviation oriented pubs; this book would make for a nice guide for all of us who chase airplanes for fun; once at a particular airport, we could go and visit the watering hole of feeding through if we knew which ones to go to.

Rich Sugden and Peter Klein's "Warbird Cafe" in Driggs, ID (just west of Jackson Hole). A fantastic, white table cloth restaurant on the field, with open access to Rich's collection of classic jets. Not to be missed.

tallichett's newly moved & renovated restaurant 100th bomb group at cleveland hopkins is supposed to look good. as to the food.... not open yet, could be tomaine tallichette or excellent eats, it a has definetely been a legal / faa cluster f**k through out though. best, tom :vom:

About two minutes from the Oakland Airport (CA) is a place called Francesco's Italian Restaurant. It's on the corner of Hegenberger Rd. and Pardee Drive. With a couple hour layover at Oakland, you might be able to get a taxi driver to make the short drive. It's an afternoon-evening fine dining type of Restaurant with good food.

One of the banquet halls is wall to wall aviation, along with a number of large scale model aircraft hanging from the ceiling. The main hallway has lot's of pictures, with famous and not so famous people.

Two greasy spoons come to mind:

One at the St. Charles Airport, St. Charles, MO and the other at the Hondo Municipal Airport, Hondo, TX.

The conversation is what these places are about; good down to earth folks, aviation and otherwise; your tipical hamburger and fries fare, nothing out of the ordinary.

I spent about three years of Saturdays in Hondo, Texas crewing the Yellow Rose and its far from a greasy spoon!. The best thing is the desert.
We would tell them what we wanted that day and as we walked in, she was pulling it out of the oven. I still fly down there just to have lunch.

All I got there was a so-so hamburger and fries that had seen better days : ) [I'm joking]

Just by coincidence, I found today that there is a bar / restaurant near the Kansas City International Airport, name shall remain unmentioned, but it has an aviation theme. Why unmentioned? Well, a wife-swapping and anything goes meeting was the reason for the report that was published in one of those "fringe' newspapers.

Yup, Indeed!

The newspaper is called "The Pitch" and it is an "alternative news" newspaper; Houston has one, (The Houstonpress) so does St. Louis (Riverfront Times), so does basically every city, and I am sure you have seen them; these are distributed free, and have political articles, usually left-leaning, and fringe opinions and also -good when you are in a new town- good reviews and ads for restaurants and bars.

And then, there are also your massage parlors, your other "special" ads and so on . . .

Avoid Flo's Airport Cafe at Chino Airport if you want anything more than crummy diner food. Some people swear by it, but I'm not impressed by anyplace whose claim to fame is dead flies on the window sills and farmers in muddy rubber boots (remember, this is dairy cow country- no telling what is on those boots!).

Another top hangout at Chino is Graziano's. Great sandwiches and Italian fare....It's off the airport but was a cool place to eat....although the decor was non aviation.
