Warbird Information Exchange

It is one of the four prototype XF4U-4's built. This one only had about 800 hours on the airframe when stored in a box at Norfolk. It was used for armament testing so there are some non-standard stuff in the cockpit. Also, Marine Corps Ace and MOH recipient, Marion Carl, flew this aircraft in testing!
though it was cosmetically restored in the late 1970's, it's still pretty much a time capsule.

he received one.

Mike had it right. This is FG-1D, BuNo.92508 not long after Jerry Yagen purchased it from Robert Lammerts. This is after Yagen's crew refurbished the areas you see in primer, but before the plane was sent off to receive its current VF-17 paint scheme.

p.s In case you missed it, an unid F4U-1A in a farm somewhere USA. next to it a DC-3. c. 1950s. Place Ukn. Via AEC.

That's F4U-1A, BuNo.18047 while parked at Long Beach, CA during May of 1956. This one photo is the only known evidence I've seen of its existence. It would have been extremely rare to find an early -1A model lingering in period-correct, pre-1947 military markings as late as 1956. My best guess is that this must have been a tech school aircraft (note that there is no civilian registration). I had planned to one day request the FAA registration info for the N-number on that transport in the background, hoping that would give a hint to the owner of the Corsair.

Tks for the info & data. I'll do some digging fm my end about the a/c with rudder stripes. That scheme looks familiar to some B-18s that came fm S. of the border & were used for crop spraying services. S. SW USA!! c. 1950s.
