I just found a couple pictures of it online. It was actually a captured German project called DFS 346 and the pilot laid prone like the NORTHROP experimental fighter, two stacked single chambered engines, I just entered Soviet rocket plane and it popped right up. Look under aerospaceweb.org, it's Buddtuggli

BTW, the X-1 sequence at the end of the film was the last time X-1 2062 ("Glamorus Glennis") actually flew. (opps, will I get sued for using the GG name? ) Chuck Yeager was at the controls and it was flown just for the film cameras. All flying shots for the X-1 sequence with the "Soviet" aircraft in formation with it, were shot on that one drop. It took a lot of planning to make sure they got all the footage they needed and they had to have a camera crew on the ground to capture the one X-1 landing too!

Can't seem to find any information on test pilot Wolfgang Zeise who flew the DFS-346. A German who "volunteered" his services to the Soviets to test the aircraft. :P

Looking @ the DFS you can almost see that it could have morphed into the AS-5 KELT standoff missle carried under some Tu-95's.

Did Levier have a side job jamming radar by wearing argyle socks and a flowered tie?

You're probably thinking of the German designed DFS 346. I don't think the USSR ever copied the X-1.

Thought the Soviets did develop (sort of) an X-1 knockoff that was dropped from under the wing of a Tu-4 BULL, recall seeing a picture of it somewhere

The design of the DFS was captured by the Russians and was flown several times as either a glider or under power, if you GOOGLE DFS 346 under 'images' you will find several typically Soviet style photos of the aircraft, including several pictures of one under the right wing of a Tu-4 BULL, and since it was inside the same time frame as the X-1 it sort of IS the X-1ski.

If you are wondering about the reference to Tony LeVier, there was a photo posted and rescinded, showing a roomful of important aviation types from the period in a studio viewing room watching a screening of 'Jet Pilot' but from the looks on their faces, they all look like they'd just seen 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' and were about to enjoy big, steaming mugs of skunk boiled whole served over gypsum biscuits. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM-Good Cracker!

The Inspector wrote: At the beginning of the film actor Paul Fix, shown standing with Wayne and Janet Leigh (Wayne and Fix were long time friends, Fix appeared in a lot of the mid 30's 58 minute 'LONESTAR' oaters that Wayne made before STAGECOACH shot him to mega stardom)

Fix is better known for his role of Sheriff Mica Torrance from The Rifleman, he also was the Doctor on the pilot episode of a little know 60s tv series called Star Trek.

Yes I deleted the pic, to be honest I thought the response(s) to it were puerile.

Nice to see you're maintaining your perfect sense of humor over the Holidays, thought this was a sort of 'fun' thread not an analytical treatise of RKO pictures, Nappy Foo Near to you 2

You need to lighten up a bunch

I'm doing just fine this holiday season, thanks for asking.

As for providing fodder for members like yourself that was never my intention with posting the pics. And besides if I need a chuckle I'll watch John Wayne in "The Conqueror"
