The main reason we mix 100LL with Jet A in our F86 is for relight capabilty at higher altitudes in case of a flameout.

Don't you get high EGTs on startup with 100 percent gasoline on jets?

Wasn't that a contributing factor to Dave Zeuschel's flameout?

We're only running between 20-30% 100LL and we get normal EGT on starts.

What types of fuel would be used on aircraft with both recip. & jet engines (C-123, B-36, P2V, etc.)?

Would they run the turbines on avgas or have seperate tanks for avgas/jet fuel?

Regards,

Both the Wright 3350's and the Westinghouse J34's on the HARS airworthy Neptunes Ex RAAF 273 and Ex French 591 run on AVGAS.

The J34s are referred to as the FUEL DUMPS.......they are not overally economical !!

The catch here is that turbines can burn avgas, but pistons (excluding diesels) can't burn jet fuel. JP-4 jet fuel was a mixture of kerosene & gasoline & came about in '51 so lots of jets were running it back then, (even F-86s?) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JP-4 From what I understand, turbines just don't develop as much power on a gasoline due to reaching max temps way before they would on jet fuel.
