I've been asking the same question regarding the Bristol Centaurus in the flying Furies or those under rebuild.
I had thought that the sleeves were as rare as hens teeth but real Furies (with five blades) seem to be taking to the air.
What is involved in keeping these engines operational? (and when will we see one in a Tempest II)

Rick, Pioneer Aero (NZ) plans to rebuild Tempest Mk.II MW376 with a Centaurus engine. There is also a long-term project in the UK (MW763).

Hi.

Just a little bit of information.

The SAAB/Daimler Benz deal relating to the DB605 dates from the inter war years, engines where meant
for the SAAB B-18 bombers,they were tractor engines,not pushers,as in the J 21/A 21 family,which also had slight differences.

SAAB reportedly produced its post war engines without a licence, but fees were apparently paid to the Germans whan things settled down a little.

Ciao,Francesco.

@Flagon: SAAB did n o t produce the licence DB 605´s, VOLVO Flygmotor made them, SAAB produced the planes they were used in.

Alfa Romeo license-built the DB 601 as the RA 1000 RC 41-1 Monsone (Monsoon). Fiat license-built the DB 605 as the RA 1050 RC 58 Tifone (Typhoon).

After the war, Fiat sold 13 G-55s powered by the RA 1050 RC 58 Tifone to Syria. The way that county is quickly imploding, it might be time to start planning a trip to go poke around the Syrian scrap yards.

I'd like to think I have a healthy set of adventure...but I also have a healthy sense of self-preservation! I don't think I'd be booking any aviation archaeology trips to Syria before the bullets stop flying!

Correct,VOLVO built the engines,not SAAB.
The fact remains, though, that the deal was struck for the SAAB B 18 bombers years before the J 21/A 21 came into existence and the pusher engines did have a different suffix and were unlicenced copies,
even though SAAB paid royalties after the engines were manufactured.

Also,it would be EXTREMELY interesting if there were any survivors of the Syryan G 55s,albeit we do have a representative G 55 at Vigna di Valle(former G 59 with a Merlin 500-20).

There is a "legend" that the DB 605 D (yes D) in Black Deuce also originated from a private collector in Italy.

Ciao,Francesco.(e se sbalio mi corrigerete)

I purchased a DB 605A crankcase from someone in Leipzig, Germany in 2010 and had it shipped to my location in the USA. I have purchased DB 605 parts from Ebay (Evil-bay) sellers in Germany and Austria and have info on a wrecked (but mostly complete) DB605 for sale in Belgium. Granted most parts I buy are non-airworthy but I buy them to use as templates to manufacture new parts. The most sought after major parts are the reduction gear housing and the accessory housing as they are magnesium castings and dissolve very easily.

There is a gentleman in Austria producing new reduction gear housings for the DB 605A according to the photos on his website.

I spoke to Mike Nixon at Oshkosh 2011 about DB 605s and he said he has several cores but that they are in bad shape. The biggest obstacle is the fact that, at least in the USA, there is NO demand for Daimler-Benzs as there is for Allisons and Merlins. Where there is no demand there is no motivation and no one willing to fund such a project.

Then you should hope that Germany sent a bunch of crated aircraft to Burma. :)

Well, I doubt the Burma connection. But there were always rumours of a large formation of U-boats lost on their way to Japan with at least 25 Me 109 K-4´s on bord. Maybe TIGHAR can have a look for them during their search in the Pacific area? :axe:

Talk to Ellsworth Getchell. He's been making it happen for a long time.

Thanks to OP (and Google) I now know something about Ellsworth Getchell and his long relationship with his Fury.
Another 105!
