Mosquito first air show today

Reasonable question. Adding to Rich's comment: Apparently, vertical manouvres were restricted for the display, and while the display was impressive, it was relatively low demand on the structure and engines. Several engine runs on the previous days to the first flight were carried out, and the team were happy with their performance.

More time would have been desirable, but wasn't necessary.

I would be more than happy if the Mosquito didn't do any vertical manouvers -there are plenty of Pitts and Yaks around that can do that stuff!

I spoke to a Gordon Sweetapple once, that had owned one of the B35's used in 633 Squadron (or Mosquito Squadron, cannot remember exactly but the airplane is in the Mosquito Museum) and flown by Neil Williams. Gordon wanted air to airs of the Mosquito and wanted to use his Twin Comanche for a photo ship. Neil asked if the Twin Comanche would do 200kts. Gordon said no, why? Neil responded that he would never fly a Mosquito at less than 200 kts once airborne. It was decided to fly past the Piper, with the Mosquito at 200kts, and the photos were taken.

When one of the greatest pilots in the world hedges his bet when flying a challenging airplane, one would do well to take his advice to heart. Level, high speed operation of the Mosquito seems quite conservative and proper and the New Zealanders flying the Yagen airplane are to be commended.

I think I might've enjoyed the Anson display as much as the Mossie! Although turning up the volume doesn't do quite as much for the Anson.

I'm surprised a newly built aircraft with a total of three hours flight time was allowed at an airshow at all.

As 51fixer says although newly built its not a new design and everything was done by the book and to the drawings. Also our CAA have a very good working reputation with Avspecs and of course Avspecs are known for quality. I'm sure if there was any concerns it wouldn't have happened. I'm glad it did though as I was one happy man that day!!

I understand there's no latches as such (they'd have been useful!). From my post on the Wings over New Zealand forum, where a question was asked on the creeping open door: "There were some issues the team had with getting the adjustment and system for the bomb (aft) doors to work as desired, so they were secured closed, but one crept a little - though nothing to worry about."

Bear in mind the aircraft flew with unpainted and literally just finished cowlings on Thursday, wasn't able to fly on Friday due to weather, and the display (and photos) was Saturday. I know Rich isn't criticising them, but while no shortcuts were taken, there was a triage between 'necessary' and 'nice to do' stuff given the priorities.

No doubt the flying is helping build a post restoration sqawk list. Gages that read a little high or low, rigging that was set at factory specs but needs tweaking, tiny leaks, hydraulic, etc. Things that can't be detected on the ground.
Some sqawks won't show up in the first 5 or ten flight hours. I flew a Supercub, N4610Y, to it's new home a week ago. We have flown it about 20 hours. After the delivery flight it had a dozen miniscule items. We fixed those and have found another half dozen. Another 10 flight hours and we'll probably have everything covered. And this is only on a 150hp. aircraft.

WOW.......What a good looking ship, and some beautiful photos......Glad to hear those B Bay doors were secured. Going to be a proud delivery to Jerry at MAM.....sounds incredible, too.....

No doubt the contract contains a requirement for 5 hours of Flight Test. Ours did for the P-40, built across the airfield at Pioneer (where the Tempest is currently being built). During these flights you don't want to wander too far away. So maneuvering overhead the field, or nearby, is pretty much what they'd be doing anyway.

It doesn't matter much to the pilot whether there's a crowd below or not. His focus would have been 100% on the aeroplane. Especially that one.

I think "our" first Mosquito rebuild will be well looked after over in the US. I'm sure Jerry has some top pilots ready to convert onto her once she's reassembled. You guys will have a real treat when you hear her roar past!! I believe you are getting the next one too so imagine two of them together and once the Canadian one flies even three!
As this aircraft was originally Canadian built Jerry said he wants to display her in Canada at some point too which will be full circle for her!
