I think that he has plans to retire this year.

Great news for the Planes of Fame show the weekend after next. Apparently FIVE P-38's are now committed to come to the show and the hope is that there will be 5 in the air together for the first time possibly since WWII. Keep your fingers crossed.

There were 5 in the air together on the way to the Capital City Airshow a couple of years ago. Although not all five completed that trip they did start out with that many. I know, I was at Chino when all 5 departed! (And what a sight and sound it was.)

GOOD point! Maybe Chino this year will be the first time since WWII that 5 will be "officially" together at an air show. Are there any photos of the five together in the air when departing Chino in 2010?

Yes, Frank Mormillo shot the formation air-to-air on departure from Chino, the photos were used in at least one magazine.

Hopefully 'Tangerine' will make it to the show as scheduled, it would be great to see it in a different setting - it had been slated to be part of the P-38 reunion at that Capital City show a few years back as well (which, had everything worked out, would have had all six P-38's that are actively flown in the U.S. assembled together (the only other one actively flown of course is the Red Bull example based in Austria)). For the upcoming POF show, the only one 'missing' from the projected line-up is "Ruff Stuff", which had been part of the Capital City show gathering.

The first photo in the following link shows when all five were flying together, before "23 Skidoo" had to drop out due to an engine problem.
