Seems like I have read that the main reason Gable joined up was that he didn't care if he lived or died after Carole Lombard was killed. Sort of a suicide attempt without actually "attempting."
I could be totally off base.

lombard's death devastated gable. after his miltary service he did not have any desire to fly, it was even written into his movie contracts as a deal clause. his witnessing the death of a b-17 crewman & how lombard died had an affect on him. gable only reflected outwardly on that premise. he stewed about her death, his mother inlaw's, & one of his closest friends & business advisors who were also fatalities on the flight. he wondered about their final experiences & possible thoughts minutes prior to the crash. there was speculation that gable was somewhat wreckless on his missions as conveyed by his superiors & fellow crewmen, but there is nothing to definetely substantiate those observations. fyi.... my friend robb hill, an avid wreck chaser was 1st to find the crash scene many years later.
