Neat machines... Brad and I are in the planning stages of a web page. Another one of those rare airplanes that needs its own web page to pull the story and pictures together.

Here is one page that has some history on it.

I worked for the banner operator in Ft Lauderdale who has the Rawdons. I believe that he has 6 or more of them as of two years ago. Jimmy Butler is his name.

Rawdon was a Wichita company if I remember correctly.

The Kansas Aviation Museum has a T-1 and an R-1 in storage.

Glen,

I'm thinking the other one you've seen lately is this one.
Image

It's #36, the last one built. Up until a few months ago, it was owned by the guy that Chuck mentioned. It's now owned by a private owner in Florida. Many years ago, it was owned by a different company and it was used for banner towing. It was painted white when the Rawdon company sold it back in the 70's, so it might be the same plane.

The company that Chuck worked for, Aerial Signs, has been sold and is now "Van Wagner Aerial Media". They have two Rawdons left, # 30 that started this whole thread and #31 in the next picture.
Image

Jimmy Butler, the guy Chuck worked for, has one disassembled Rawdon left, #33.

I'm still trying to get him to sell it to me!

Dan, Brad, guys:

First, Dan and Brad: I am sure that you have copies of whatever I have on the Rawdons, since I have sent Brad every little bit of data I have gathered. But, if you want, I can re-send everything either to you Dan or to Brad, for your planned web-site.

Now, for everyone else, the following are bits and pieces of data gathered on the Rawdons, and some registration and construction data kindly provided by Mr. John Davis (Wichita, KS) aviation historian extraordinaire:

Date: 9/15/2004 1:48 PM

Brad:

Interesting pictures, particularly the Salvadorean machine.

But going "in reverse," was interested to know you had bought T1-15 here, in Kansas. Give a call before/when you get here - and maybe we can meet up. You have my e-mail address, phone is 316 + 685 -7929.

The photos are great, and are 'pre-delivery' shots, taken at the former Rawdon Field, here in Wichita. I suspect that the photo of the three FAC aircraft was taken on the same day as the aerial shot of the three of them in formation. There appears to be no external evidence of special fitments for armaments, but we really need some photos of the front of the wings and fuselage to see if there was anything special in evidence.

Now to the Salvadorean aircraft YS-237. The registration is in the first (?) post-war registration sequence, which was an ascending series (with a few duplicates) up to YS-305 approx (that being the highest number I have). YS-237 dates from approximately May 1955. In January 1957 - as far as I can see - all surviving aircraft were reregistered in new sequences that included a suffix/function letter. In the case of the Rawdons an "A" for 'Agricultura.' Thus YS-237 would have become YS-ooo-A. YS-300-A was still on the register in 1965. My presumption is that when you refer to YS-300, you are talking of YS-300-A - photo of confirmed date info would be most helpful.

Your N2702D T1-16S is given as a 1954 aircraft, but I have no date for the one you have bought N2700D T1-15S. Do you have exact 'dates of manufacture' of these aircraft? N2703D T1-20SD was built in July 1956. Thus YS-237 has to be TI-17S, TI-18S, or TI-19S. TI-18S became
YS-401A on 2nd July 1957. YS-400-A was registered the same day, and is given as c/n TI-25D (sic). "TI-25D" would correctly be TI-25SD, but that has a known history as N2707D and CX-AUR ((Uruguay). Also germane to this discussion are T1-22 (no info), and TI-22 (model unknown) which became YS-404A on 23Aug57.

I would like to suggest that five aircraft were delivered to El Salvador - c/nos 17, 18, 19, 21 & 22. These became YS-400-A to YS-404-A in the 1957 reregistration; and that after various accidents a 'new' aircraft YS-300-A was built from the parts available. One further aircraft, T1-27S an T1-SD N2708D became YS-448-A on 24th November 1958, but does not relate to the earlier machines. Somewhere in a newspaper or magazine report there has to be a story on these aircraft being delivered.

I would, of course, welcome your comments, criticisms, or belly laughs.

John

RE: Rawdon T-1

Message:

The three Rawdon T-1s mentioned by Brad as being supplied to the Colombian Air Force were serial numbers 8M, 9M and 10M. They received a US Export Certificate dated October 21st 1952 and the paperwork indicated they had Air Force serials 120, 121 and 122 respectively.

Another example [NOT SAMPLE!!] , serial number 7, had an Export CofA on May 7th 1952 and went to Colombia as HK-289E.

These aircraft were designed for sport, training or
crop-dusting. A photo I've seen in Jane's of a T-1S looks as though what is actually a spray tank under the belly, could be construed as a bomb!

Thanks Brad,

That would be the one........don't know why I was thinking it was all yellow.

It probably was the white one I saw in the 70's!

Tulio's data shows some as having Kinner engines. How many original engine installations were offered when new?

Sounds kind of like a Mallard, when you see one with Radials on it everyone says "gee, I wonder who converted that?"

Chuck, when did you work for jimmy?????? I was there from 88 to 94. Great company, I look at my yrs there fondly. I had hope to retire there and go back to work there for his son james jr. But since the selling of the company, I doubt that will happen now.
Jimmy has always liked the Rawdon, have no idea why... tried 6 yrs to get him to buy a N3N but it was a no go. I see in the one pic that they still have the DR-1.

I have the Rawdon pages from Juptner book in PDF format. Just to save BDK some time. :) These pages and a couple other articles will be posted on the Rawdon page very soon.

Email me if you want a copy.

OK, I give up, who is the Type Certificate holder for the Rawdon?

I tried to pull up the TCDS for Rawdon and it is not listed as such.

Even better yet, is there such a thing as a cross reference directory to locate Certificate holders? I remember going crazy years ago trying to find the Certificate for a Grumman Mallard........of course it's listed under Frakes Aviation, not Grumman. The North American T-6's are under Rockwell, not North American, etc. It sure would be helpful to find such a directory that enabled you to look up the original manufacturer and it would give you the name of the Certificate holder.

Any clues,

Glenn

I worked for his company in 2003 but mostly in daytona Beach. I went down there a few times to drop off airplanes for maintenance. Yes, I flew airplanes that across the everglades down to Ft. Lauderdale that needed to be fixed. The things that you do when you are trying to build time!!!!
I did fly banners down in Maimi, around the port and up the beach. Everytime they show the opening to CSI Miami, I recognize the beaches and buildings I used to fly past.
Butler was very friendly and liked to tell me about all his planes. I didnt know that he had sold until I read through this post.

Hi Dan,

I was finishing the restoration of a -5 Corsair about the same time he was having his -5 restored. Used to communicate a couple of times a week to talk Corsair. We finished the projects, he got into helicopters, and I lost touch with him. If the area code is still 817 I'll give him a call and see what he's into these days.

Thanks Dan,

Glenn

Any idea who the Certificate holder is for the Rawdon?

Brandon:

Thank you for the offer.

Since Dan and Brad will be setting their web-site soon, I will dowload the data from there.

Again, thank you!
