Don't lump me in your generality, My folks taught me to listen with both ears, see with both eyes, read everything I could find on a subject, toss it around in my brain to see where the balance point is, and ruminate on it.
Todays phony hacked AP tweet about 'bombs at the White House' that drove the stock market nuts for a while is a perfect example of all parrots squawking at once and having the brains of a flea------

I remember back in high school -so long ago- there was a rumor of local kids "from another school district" who were performing satanic rituals and were planning on kidnapping somebody from our school to use in their activities. It got everybody stirred up. The rumor floated around for weeks and there was talk at every bonfire, football game, and after-school event about "what-if's" in case this happened. Nothing ever happened.
The internet has become a superhighway of information. And since it is new, we are due for some spectacular super-crashes of misinformation a la HG Wells War of the Worlds Broadcast. If you think after reading that, "No way, we are too sophisticated," think again. Our media spent the last few weeks yellow-pressing North Korea, predicting a missile launch every few hours or minutes depending on what outlet you read. It would't take much for a match to get lit in a frayed-nerve environment and start a fire, war, or international incident based SOLELY on internet misinformation. Our politicians and media seem to be working hand-in-hand creating this type of emotional environment. There is a term for this. It is called AGIT-PROP or Agitation Propaganda.
It only works if you let yourself be deceived into believing that EVERYTHING written on the internet is true. You have to critically think about things you read and hear and not accept them just because your local news anchor, Rush Limbaugh, or a publicist told you. Don't forget that large media outlets have their own agenda, and despite claims, they are more interested in getting a jump on a competitor than getting the truth out to the public.

Dear God, if there were a "LIKE" button, I'd mash that flippin' thing so hard it would go back in time.

Really glad that no one was hurt. That truly is the most important thing. No doubt the bird will get the required lovin' and I bet there will be some kind of a procedure change.
Thanks to Rob for giving us the actual "news". The 262 program is such a rare opportunity, I wish it, and the Collings foundation, the best of success.
Let's hope for an uneventful 2013 airshow season
Fly safe.

Clear the air ? You got the straight story directly from the people involved. And you got it before the aircraft was even in the hangar. How much more " clear air " could there be ? The only reason that we felt a response was warranted was because the Midland PR person sent out a misleading statement to the media as to the severity of the incident by calling it a crash !
Here is a picture taken just after the canopy separation.

While I'm glad there was a fairly happy ending to this story, I wonder about a couple of things. If damage was so minor, why was it left on the runway and why was it being 'slowly towed' off? If everything is so hunky-dory, why not just fire it up and taxi to the shop, then and there? Enquiring minds wanna know.

We elected to tow the aircraft because we wanted to make sure there were no issues with the internal locking mechanism in the actuators. There are no manual locking devices for the gear. Just a precaution.
The other reason it took so long was that we couldn't move the aircraft until the local FAA came out and told us it could be moved.

Thanks for your candor Rick.
I wish you folks all the best in the continuation of this amazing program.
The aircraft looks amazing BTW.

Just to bounce off what Rick said as well - FAA regulations are not specific in this area, but it's pretty well accepted that once you declare an emergency and stop the airplane, it isn't to move under its own power until the FAA or NTSB says it's okay. There's also another thing to consider - once that canopy departed the airplane, it's no longer airworthy. As a matter of principle, you don't typically operate an aircraft on movement areas in a known un-airworthy condition. As such, the smart idea is to tow it off the runway to where it can be inspected, the proper logbook entries be made, and the airplane verified to be airworthy before you move it again.

Thanks for the update, Rick, and thanks for tolerating all of us lookey-loos and nosey birds. We are just thankful all is well, and look forward to her flying again soon!
