So the consensus is these planes are bare aluminum except for the fabric covered and wood control surfaces, eh?

Great find of fine era in the history of F4us!! Tks for posting 'em!

p.s Did you also capture the sample behind the "black MR F4U" ?? The little jet "V" is a plus! Tks

Not sure exactly what you mean. It looks as if there's another F4U behind the MR plane, but its an optical illusion. I think it looks that way because the horizontal tail has been removed. Adding one more bonus shot, but that's about it for the "yard from which dreams are made." Hate to call it a bone yard.

We must have been at Mojave around the same time frame in mid 178, somewhere (unless former #2 pitched them) I have around 100 KODAK 110's of all of those and more, I went up the ramp and watched the crew finish sanding the QUICKIE 2 that day on my journey from New Orleans back home to Seattle.

Ignomini/Inspector:

Good day!

You are correct there were 2 F4Us only at that side of the house. Maybe you or Inspector remember seeing another F4U sample some distance away that was used in a Hollywood movie/commercial of an F4U crash-landing sequence. Nice 240Z!!!!

Tks

Zippy

My pic #5 shows BuNo 88383 after paint (as indicated in my OP), pic #4 shows it pre-paint during run-ups.
My pic #7 is Buno 121859.
The only survivor in my pictures is BuNo 92468 now with the CAF (as indicated in my OP).

These were active aircraft that are just going through depot repair/overhaul. They came in painted, were stripped of paint, inspected, repaired as needed, repainted and sent back to the fleet or reserve squadron. These pics were taken in Feb. 1950, just normal aircraft maintenance. The Korean Conflict/War didn't start until June 1950 and the FG-1D's in the photos weren't used in Korea anyway.

F4U-5 Folks/Mark:

Good day!

Tks for the clarification of the Bunos, fm this side of the house.. they are hard to see. Also, while you may be correct of the maint details of the FG-1ds, this may not apply to the F4U-5 samples in your pics.

According to a Quonset NAS Book, these F4U-5s were factory fresh samples that were placed in storage w/o wings & engines c. 1950-51. They had a special hangar called "Aircraft Mod Unit." They refer 'em as "apple-green zinc-chromate primer" samples & were not NMF type F4Us.

p.s What does the M&S letters stand for at the JAX facility? I'm pretty sure the photo below shows the final assy of these F4U-5N samples. I may be wrong. Maybe R. Mears may shed some light into these Korean/ Storage F4U samples.
