"Rauchen verboten!" means "smoking is forbiden" or "no smoking"
(Various German aircraft outside Munich c 1945, slide 3.)

I wonder if these worn warriors were being repaired and updated by Adam Opel AG?
The company came a long way from building sewing machines in an unused cow stall in Rüsselsheim...
or, did they come full circle?

That photo early in the thread of the "A-30" at Takoradi, what is an A-30? It looks a lot like a Lockheed Hudson, which would make sense as Takoradi was the startign point in Nigeria for the "Takoradi Route" where aircraft were assembled off the ships and then flown north all the way to Egypt to then go into the front lines in the Mediterranean.

Well the A28 and A29 were the USAAC designations for the Hudson. (A28 Pratt and Whitney engines and A29 Wright Cyclones). US Navy called them PBO-1 so no idea what an A30 was?

Thanks Warbird51, the Baltimore makes sense now that I look again. I have never heard it referred to as the A-30 before, I didn't even know the USAAF had flown the Baltimore and given it such a designation. I thought it had only been used by the RAF and Free French.

It's been pretty tame and relaxed around WIX for a long time IMHO. Nothing real negative to lock threads over. Nice indeed and no complaints from me anyway. But I have a question for those who care to respond. No real drama ... I hope.

I receive a good bit of PM's, of which I'm usually very flattered and happy to try to help out from time to time as I enjoy searching out old photos. I rarely get anything bizarre and I would never feel the need to publicly call out anyone for anything too negative, so no need to call out the person who sent me this PM other than to post a portion of his/her PM. The reason is I would like a few second opinions before I make a decision. So here it goes ... BTW this only applies to the quote below, I'll admit I'm not perfect with accurate info, stating sources and thin skin from time to time, but never thought I would be called out on this below,

"You seem to enjoy tragic accidents and loss of life, you should rethink posting crash photos because it disrespects the dead"

This is the only part I'll post and no I'm not upset per say as everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I certainly wouldn't take that away from anyone. Just to be clear I certainly do try not to knowingly post tragic loss of life photos. Have I posted photos where fatalities occurred? Of course I have but the intent was never to disrespect loss of life or family. Sometimes it's difficult to know what the real results of a prang were back then.

I've always stated clearly that if anyone is ever offended by any photo I post just simply ask me to remove it and it's gone no questions asked ... Period!!!!

Sorry I offended you of which you will remain anonymous out of respect. This post is not intended to "call you out" but rather to hear others opinions on this matter.

Hope you folks don't mind the post. Not a big deal just wondering others opinions on this particular matter.

Thanks Mark

I do not mind photos or videos of crashed/crashing aircraft.

For me, it is not disrespectful at all to the dead or injured. It is an opportunity to learn from their tragic circumstance, so that I may not end up the same place someday.

Seeing a badly crashed spray plane for instance, lets me know what can happen when things go bad, and makes me that much more vigilent in my flying so I do not end up in the same place. If I can talk to the pilot after the crash, so much the better to learn about the chain of events that lead up to it.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey Mark,
Always enjoy your posts. I'm also not easily offended.
Something I always bear in mind is the limitations of communicating through the keyboard.
It's way to easy for a thought or idea to get taken the wrong way, next thing you know a keg of powder blows up in someones face  WTF!
I think that with your preface of "Let me know if this offends and I'll remove it immediately" leaves you a fair bit of leeway.
As far as the person who P.M'd you, I find that approaching with a request, vs approaching with an attack, is better received.

Free advice.
Worth what you paid!

Andy

Mark,

I am not offended at all by your posts. Part of me feels like if we posted nothing but the "clean and sanitzed" photos we would become a little less sensitive to how brutal and ugly warfare really is. I am sure there are thjose who would argue it the other way as well.

As long as there are not images of bodies or pieces parts strewn all about, I say post away!

Thanks for your always interesting posts,

Tom P.

That person who sent you that PM needs to get a life. I don't view photos of crashed or crashing aircraft in the hope I'll see a person in pain or dead and I know you don't. None of your photos glorify accidents just showing what can go wrong and did. Keep on posting I love your threads! :drink3:

The photos are a valuable education tool. A lot can be learned from them.
Many times the only photo of a particular aircraft marking is found on a wreck photo.
Every wreck has a story behind it that needs to be learned and remembered.
Please post more.

Mark,

I'm with the post them group.

Not every person who gave their life for this country did it on the battlefield. The majority of aircraft losses & fatalities were not due to combat losses, but were due to operational or training accidents. Even if the cause of a crash was due to "pilot error" that doesn't make that person any less of a hero than somebody that was KIA due to enemy action. All of them deserve to be remembered for making the sacrifices that they did.

I do not find your accident or crash photos at all disrespectful. To read that comment really torques my jaws because you are one of the most generous and respectful people on this site. You have never, as far as I remember, posted a gory photo nor have you ever started off with a "Guys, check this chit out, this crash is so cool" opening line. So it's beyond me how anyone could consider you seeming to "enjoy tragic accidents and loss of life".

To me, to only post the sanitized non-fatal photos would be disrespectful. That would make it very easy to forget what those guys had to face day in & day out just flying not to mention throwing in combat to boot. Might as well just rewrite the history books. Nobody in WWII ever died in an aircraft accident, they all were killed by the mean dastardly Axis Powers.

Sorry for the rant, just glad I didn't have a tragic accident or lose my life by falling off my soap box.

Mac

Post 'em. I don't want to see gruesome stuff, but I fully understand that flying aircraft, particularly in a combat environment is/was a very dangerous occupation. That is just a fact and the pictorial record shows it.

As far as people being offended by pictures (particularly the rather benign ones you post), I think there are people who go out of their way today to be offended, outraged, disrespected, etc. I don't pay them much attention. I imagine that offends them. ;-)
