As to your question about what types were around;
There were F-63s for sale at DM in 1958 according to my dad that went to get a T-6 and T-28 for some people. He described the scene for the King Cobras as straight surplus, flyable and ready to ferry, or licensed and painted. Priced accordingly. There were vendors at the ready with parts and labor available for your surplus fighter needs. He also said the majority of the action was with transports and bombers. He later got a job ferrying a B-26.

That's a cool story. Flyable King Cobras available in the
late '50's... I wonder where they all went. Did your dad take any photos of the airplanes he delivered or saw kicking around?
