I think the thread was intended for most "famous" individual US fighter aircraft/airframe, not a type, or scheme- but a single aircraft. At least that is how I took it- thus my vote for Marge.

Scheme wise the flying tigers is undoubtedly readily recognized- but not a exact airframe.

Marge has instant recognition to most (all?) enthusiasts, and even by more casual observers. Many could name name the pilot associated with Marge, or vice versa, and readily recognize that airframe. Not nearly as many folks can recognize other individual airframes or pilots.

Perhaps some airframes are more historic (more kills), but not as famous.

+1 vote on this one - this photo and several others of Lou IV / E2-C was the very first individual WW2 fighter that I can remember learning about or being able to identify as a kid 50 years or so ago. Learned about most if not all of the other airplanes and pilots only later.
