A friend used to collect early flight helmets. He called it the "1:5:1" rule. The owner either thinks it's worth about a fifth of it's actual value or 5 times its fair market value.

I am going to respect the guys wishes. There is more at play here that is bigger then you and I. All I can say is people need to start writing the Air Force Museum and their state rep. The museum has some very evil people working there that love flexing their power and obviously have no regard to preserving history.

AGREE!
The USAF Museum is downsizing their aircraft collection and instead of helping others acquire them, many will be scrapped.

That might be the most bull spit thing I've ever read on WIX.

That's funny, I was just at the NMUSAF last week and there was a brand new multi-million dollar building they were filling with rare and valuable aircraft. Who knew it was really a den of evil?

Hyperbole much?

As everyone here is fully aware, organizations are full of all sorts of characters. Some good, some bad, but mostly good. And we all know that they're filled with opinionated folks.

This continual axe grinding against one org or another (CAF, NMUSAF, ad nauseum...) it's tedious at best and counterproductive at worst. If you're going to lay out a description like "evil" then at least have some facts to support your allegations.

They are sending an armed guard with an M-16 to watch the parts get scrapped! The owner will not be compensated and on top of it he is being audited.

Im sure 99% of folks at USAFM are great caring people. The government side of the fence is not! Im surprised to get a backlash on this. I would think people here are on the same page. Guess not.

+1! Keep up the good work, Dave. You are doing a great service saving and preserving aviation history. I've never seen someone work so hard and so passionate. :drink3:

First, thanks for providing the insight though I'm not sure what the connection between the armed guard and the NMUSAF is. I mean, as far as I know the NMUSAF isn't weaponized.

Second, Wow! That sucks. Seems like that person should contact their U.S. Rep right away. This is exactly the kind of thing they're good for.

I'm not sure I believe that.

However, lately the NMUSAF seems more interested in downsizing than saving.
And yes, I'll bring up the (my frequently mentioned gripe here) scrapped the B-47 they sent to Ellsworth.
If it was intact enough to survive NE winters, how come it suddenly became too bad to be a static?
Come on, they should fess up that they wanted parts for the RB-47 restoration palmed the rest onto Ellsworth (and probably made them pay for the shipping) and be honest that the ac would have to be scrapped after getting the parts (BTW: did they look for the parts they need at the derelict B-47 on the Edwards range?).

Likewise, it's said they took the one of a kind nose YF-89 in San Antonio....the new owners can't really display it without a nose.

I'm not complaining about finding homes for common aircraft, but the numbers of B-47s and F-89s is really low and those ac should be protected.

That sounds a bit far-fetched, and if is true, then perhaps there is more to the story than meets the eye.

I've read this about twenty times and I'm still not exactly sure what exactly you're getting at here. You're surprised at getting backlash for throwing out vague accusations about things with no real explanation or evidence?

Nathan my friend, I feel your pain! .... You could just imagine my disappointment when I was invited to make an offer on what was described as a very rare and priceless mint condition Corsair stashed away from view with little attention and only offered to serious buyers. I should have known something wasn't quite right when the seller demanded full payment in advance of showing. I just figured it was simply 'that rare and valuable' a Corsair for just anyone to have a chance to make an offer on it.

As you may know Nathan when I find a Corsair part I usually buy it either new or fully restored. This one's going to need Chuck Wahl's full attention to bring up to my standards.
