One of the stories I heard of this aircraft in my youth was an incident where for some reason a pilot had continual flame-outs and ejected at quite a high altitude in a thunderstorm.

The result was that he got dragged up in the thermals by his canopy and was battered with hail etc etc until being dumped beaten up and very bruised a half hour later or more many miles from the point of ejection. Made the papers over in UK in the early(?) sixties.

Anyone verify this?

I too remember playing on an aircraft in a park as a kid - we had a swept wing F-84! Wow, imagine my surprise when I discovered that the plane had not been scrapped but was restored and on display at the Hill Field Museum! I was unaware of how rare the swept wing model was.

Back to the Cutlass - I note that many report on the plane include an infamous habit of the nose wheel collapsing on landing - usually taking the pilot with the expiring aircraft :(
