As I understand it the B-24s were strategically disabled abandoned in place. They were "disabled" by breaking part here or there, and the parts were carefully chosen so that no one part was broken on more than one airframe, hence they set-up things for canibalization by the Indian airforce. Apparently there was some legal reason the RAF couldn't just turn over the aircraft, so this was a solution to the problem. I could be wrong though. Can anyone correct me?

I hadn't heard of B-24s used as fire bombers before. PB4Y-2s sure, but not B-24s.

I am pretty sure that there were more B-17s used in civil service as firebombers/sprayers overall... here are just the some survivors today that were firebombers/sprayers:

"Nine-o-Nine" - Collings Foundation - Fmr Firebomber
"Chuckie" - Vintage Flying Museum - Fmr Sprayer
"Fuddy Duddy" - Gen. Wm. Lyons - Fmr Firebomber
"Yankee Lady" - Yankee Air Force - Fmr Firebomber
"Boeing Bee" - Museum of Flight - Fmr Firebomber/Sprayer
"Shady Lady" - Evergreen - Fmr Firebomber
"I'll Get Around" - 390th Museum, Pima - Fmr Firebomber
"Miss Angela" - Palm Springs Air Museum - Fmr Firebomber
"Aluminum Overcast" - EAA - Fmr Sprayer
"Yankee Doodle II" - Barksdale AFB - Fmr Firebomber
"Gremlins Hideout" - Eglin AFB - Fmr Firebomber
"Memphis Belle" - David Tallichet - Fmr Firebomber
N66571 - NASM (former Kolb) - Fmr Firebomber
44-83868 - RAF Hendon - Fmr Firebomber
"Picadilly Princess" - Fantasy of Flight (Diorama) - Fmr Firebomber
"Virgins Delight" - Castle AFB Museum - Fmr Firebomber
Unknown - Former Reilly project now in Ohio? - Fmr Firebomber

Additionally Scott Thompson's excellent book "Final Cut" lists in Appendix 6 that 23 B-17s were converted for USFS work as tankers, 16 of which are still displayed, in storage, or flying today (some listed above). Most were saved by Aero Union, Globe Air, TBM inc. and Black Hills Aviation. I think this still outweighs the former Hawkins & Powers fleet pf PB4Ys.
