12M is ridicules. A fair apprasied value according to my research would peg Fmv for this between 4.25m to 5.8m

I'm not sure you can peg a FMV on something that is one of a kind.

I can't speak to the fair market value of this airframe, but I appreciate the fact that the financial risk was taken to bring this airframe to airworthiness. I hope they get their money out of it. What an accomplishment! 10 years ago I never would have expected to see one fly.

Potential buyers might be looking at it from this perspective...Aside from its rarity and the amount of money it took to build, it is really worth two or three times the cost of a better-known type which has more extensive combat history?

What do Mustangs and Spitfires go for?
How about rarer types...Bearcats, Thunderbolts, Hurricanes?
Or comparing twins...how about a Mosquito or Tigercat?

And while we are talking numbers, for the sake of comparison, what's the asking price of Thunderbird...and what was the cost to get Doc flying?

Mick G, there have been P-51B’s and Spitfires that have cost your estimate. A Mosquito might cost in that range but probably far more. May I suggest you review the posts on here of the XP-82s restoration? It’s mind boggling complex and makes a Mosquito seem quite simple in comparison.
You guys will kill me, but if it were mine, I’d put two back seats in it and make it a four place. Maybe Red Bull will buy it and do just that. I’d sure pay a lot to fly right seat or ride in a back seat . What an experience that would be! Imagine the acceleration.

In terms of selling the back seats, might the cost of liability exceed the income?

My father flew in the right seat/fuselage of one back in the day and said as a pilot, it was a weird feeling being in an aircraft but not flying it.
I think he told me that one did not have dual controls. Likely?

When did Red Bull start selling rides?

Didn't the night fighter variant only have one pilot? Right-hand man worked the radar equipment.

I may be mistaken but, if memory serves, even the night fighter variant had dual controls and the radar man was a qualified pilot.

Maybe Mr. Jack Roush will buy it. Then he could ride in the right cockpit plus he could let his friend Bud Anderson back in the front cockpit on the right side. Those two guys deserve to get some front cockpit flying time!
The cost is probably in line with restoring another B-29, B-24 or Lancaster to airworthy status. Imagine how expensive those would be.

That's the challenge. Cost<> price. It really doesn't matter what it cost you to restore something.

I have a couple of projects around here that I'll eventually restore and dump more into them than they will be worth at the end of the day. I can do that because it is fun for me and these aren't terribly expensive projects. A commercial operation has to consider the cost of the restoration and the likely market for the finished product.

The good thing here is it only takes one wealthy buyer with a strong desire for a P-82 and things work out to everyone's satisfaction.

This seems like the kind of thing that was right up Paul Allen's alley. RIP
