Alleges wire strike in the video, but as JohnH notes, no evidence of that in his apparently on scene video.

Agree on the need for note cards- and the narrator says he has investigated aviation for years, repeatedly said he has never heard the term "nap-of-the earth" flying? Really? Isn't that a pretty well known term?

I had read a couple of blurbs before Dan's video that said the cause was unknown. I went back and read more local stuff and there was nothing there as to cause. Some of the witnesses living nearby and first on the scene and had no mention of wires down etc. Still got about another week to go, or so before the NTSB preliminary report.

I have yet to meet anyone in the warbird community that takes Gryder seriously. I fact, the opppsite is true. He has quite a history..and not a good one.

I watched this video because I was interested in the story behind this crash. As far as I can tell it is a good example of how to make a lot of sloppy video out of nothing. I'm not saying the story is wrong or not interesting, but videos like this add nothing except self-promotion and shock value. Just my two cents...

He seems to get along okay with Scott Perdue. I dunno, is a B-25 pilot part of the warbird community?

Gryder has a provocative style, self-control issues, and some weird beliefs. But he knows what he knows and is often right. I don't consider him less credible than Scott, or Juan Browne, or folks on this forum.

I am still waiting for that tell-all video that he promised after EAA kicked his butt out of Oshkosh last year though! 8)

As to this specific case, I agree, he didn't present any solid basis to think that the Huey hit wires. But whether it hit wires, a tree, or terrain, is kind of a detail, no?

With Gryder you have to “ separate the wheat from the chaff.” He’s blunt, abrasive and sometimes rushes to judgement. I always pick up a few bits of information from his reports. I don’t know why or what his motivation for making his posts.
He doesn’t sugar coat the facts.

Fair enough, but I personally know Scott is taking a reputation hit in the community because of his support of Gryder. I always felt that Scott’s videos were not a rush to judgment and he waits for the facts to come out, not so much with Gryder who doesn’t even wait for accident scene to cool down before making his videos. Trust me when I say he has a history…and not just the attempt to run over law enforcement folks with his airplane.

Or some semblance of the facts since many times he publishes his videos before the facts are known…

I have the same perspective. Unfortunately, Gryder has a long history of "questionable" activities in aviation which go well beyond the DC-3 incident with the police. Because of this, he is not at all well perceived in the warbird community. In fact, I haven't met a single person in the warbird community that talks favorably of him. There is a reason that he was fired by Delta and it's not hard to figure out why.

As far as I know, Perdue has a pretty good reputation, but his association with Gryder is starting to taint his reputation, imo.

Juan Brown is another one who's reputation is suffering from association with Gryder. I've met Juan in real life and spent some time with him. He is a good, stand-up, honest person who has no agenda. He doesn't need the money and does his youtube channel as a hobby for fun. How he got into youtube is an interesting story in itself and not at all indicative as a desire for fame or money, but rather to help people out. Juan is a great person and why he chooses to associate with Gryder is beyond me. The only thing I can think of that draws them together besides aviation is that they are both musicians and have a love of music. Maybe that's it, I don't know. Juan is pretty well known in Northern California, so I would have to believe he knew exactly what he was getting into by collaborating with Gryder. I would find it hard to believe that he didn't know of Gryder's reputation before he made this conscious decision.

And cold calling people that have likely just lost friends & family in a crash and refusing to say who you are for in an attempt to get a "gotcha" moment on their paperwork is plain crass. He does this on his Huey video with a call to the organization, and plays the actual recording of his call, saying he "is an individual" when pressed. Not sure if it is even legal to record such calls, but surely crass and irresponsible.

It depends on the laws in each state for each end of the phone. For example, I live in a state where it's not legal to record a conversation without both party permission, but if you call me from a state where you don't need permission, you've still broken the law in my state for my end of the call if I was not warned or never gave you permission if I'd had been asked.
If anyone remembers the whole Monica Lewinsky debacle, Linda Tripp got into a lot of hot water for exactly this reason, recording calls across state lines with no regard to those laws. For various reasons, Tripp got out of that only because of the immunity agreements she'd made with the independent counsel's office on the whole Clinton issue.

What happened at Oshkosh? I was aware of an incident with propwash and a Piper Cub, but I thought that was sorted...

I stumbled across Gryder when I happened across the Ciation crash last year where some leaders of a controversial church were killed.
(Long story short, the church founder's husband was a very low time jet pilot who seems to have gotten overwhelmed in IMC shortly after takeoff. ATC tapes show he had had trouble keeping a heading, didn't answer radio calls and lost a lot of altitude in a very short time before diving into a lake).

I watched several of his videos and though he was entertaining and pretty harmless if one did not take him too seriously.
I wanted to like the guy and gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Then in a follow-on video, he basically said the church officials were evil (and he is not alone in that sentiment) and then suggested he wasn't sorry they were dead. (Paraphrasing).
I was shocked by the bluntness of his statement.

Huh? A bit extreme?
Never heard a crash investigator say anything like that before.

When I emailed him and very politely suggested he temper that statement, in order to be taken a bit more seriously, all I got was abuse and name calling. A lot of abuse.
He seems more interested in getting attention and YouTube hits than being responsible.

Hey, I'm a former journalist...I understand the need to get attention.
The internet is like "reality" TV where you make a name for yourself (and viewers) anyway you can.

But there comes a point where you go beyond "hard hitting, no sugar-coating, no BS-kind of guy", and turn into something else...driven by ego or commercial reasons.

His comments to me sure seemed to suggest he knows exactly what he is doing, and doesn't care about anything than YouTube hits (which apparently one does make money from) and making a name for himself as a tough guy.

In his earlier videos he claimed he was not monetizing anything and only produced a few bits of merchandise by request. Things seemed to change during his series on the Remnant Church Citation crash. He got more sensational and made claims of being a consultant for HBO, because they made an interesting documentary on the church and the accident. YouTube money is driven by the number of views, number of subscribers and ad revenue and there is pressure for attention-getting content.

In one video he said HBO flew him to Hollywood for an interview on the church crash.
When the dicumentary came out...there was another investigator but no Dan.
Perhaps his comments were a bit too much for them?
