Anyone know if they're going with the small P38E-H style intakes like White Lightning had or are they going with the larger intakes of the J-L style?

Huh swap to larger J-L intakes?? Umm why?

I'm not sure but as for as the website leads you to believe it's going to be a restoration not a restification. Well atleast as far as the structure of the plane is concerned can't say much about the paint job at this point.

Since it should have the larger intakes, it made some sense if they are redoing it, that they'd take it back all the way. If it's still to be White Lightning, then the smaller intakes make sense.

But it doesn't seem like they're redoing White Lightning so why not go the entire route to get it back to the way it should be?

Personally I prefer the look of the early intake 38s better, but since it's an L ......

Hey Guys! I was just out to BKD on monday. I was going to post pics of the P-38, but the ones I took, are pretty much the ones on the update, 'cause the guy shooting the pics was in the shop at the same time. The P-38 is going to retain the earlier style (E-H) cowlings. Look in the photos and you will see the jig. My best impression that I get from Ashley is that the airplane will be polished (Brandon gets his wish!). With maybe one or two exceptions, all skins will be new. The airplane should be sitting on its gear in about a week. On the gondola, everything about halfway down is new. They had to make the dies for the lower channels, then press the lower channels, install them, etc.... no templates on this one. None to check against, except the drawing. The nose gear door will be new as will the lower intake cowlings. Just to re-inforce a point about Red Bull. They DO NOT want an airplane with a combat history. They want a unigue airplane, but are VERY sensitive about anything linking to the war. Very likely it will not have a military paint scheme. They also do not mind spending the dollars to have the airplane rebuilt. Alan

So is the Red Bull P-38 the former "Scatterbrain Kidd"?

Scatterbrain Kid might still be in San Marcos, Tx in pieces. Or it might have made it's way to Midland, Tx to CAF headquarters - still in pieces!

I had heard that the remains of scatterbrain kid had been traded for payment on repairs made to the f-82 before the caf had to take it back.
