I think Jim Fugate owned N5077K, 44-73856, right after Morrow had it. He ran Air Carriers, Inc in Aurora, OR. My Dad worked for him in the first half of 1968 flying Beech 18's and Queen Airs on a mail route. N5077K was modified by Fugate with extended wings (40' 6") for additional fuel cells. It raced to 6th place in the Reno Consolation race in 1967 as race #83 (day-glo red taped race number on both sides of the vertical tail and underside of right wing). Named the "Jack Adams Twinkletown Special". Painted white with dark blue stripes and N#. In 1968 it was white with a light blue fuselage stripe and light blue and red wing stripes. It wore a red #77 on tail that year. Raced to 2nd place in that year's Consolation race.
In 1969 it was N711UP with GALE AERO Corp. and race #0. I think Chuck Doyle was the man behind GALE AERO in Minneapolis. Mike Loening won the just for show Consolation Race with the now again repainted and clipped wing racer. It was a cross country racer for the most part. I recall seeing it at Aurora at least once in the N711UP colors. Maybe just visiting?
