Hope no one minds me reactivating this thread - I was posting some old photos in a different one (Digging into the archives) but I had moved on to CAF Harlingen and most of the discussion was still on Victory Air Museum at Mundalein, IL. I'll continue with Harlingen 1981 here, since this is the thread that made me dig out my old slides and have them scanned in the first place.

These were all on the ramp before Winter Airsho '81:

Looks from earlier in this thread that I should have been there in '84 to see the Twin Mustang actually fly :(

Posted this one already in one of the B-23 threads

Bombers next time...

Keep posting any year you want on this old thread!

Chris, Ellen and I were at Harlingen for four days in '84 and every time the P-82 went out for a training flight the landings were interesting to observe. Evidently the airplane has quite a different feel in the landing phase than a Mustang, and several times the airplane floated in ground effect for a good bit with varying success at touching down smoothly. Someone (the primary pilot/pilots I'd suppose) had it down and performed consistently decent landings, but there were a few clinkers thrown in as well. Hopefully you will one day still get a chance to see her or one of her sisters in the air again.

Scott

Does anyone know exactly what year the F-82 received it's black paint scheme? I went to Airsho'79 and remember her being in natural metal. Obviously it had to get painted between '79 and '81. Anyone know for sure?

It is interesting that the B-24 still has the original style nose wheel in that photo from '81. I'll have to dig around to see when they switched to that homely solid design that it has today.

It is a hub cap, it is not a solid wheel, as it would be too heavy. The B-24 had enough nose gear problems and a solid nose gear would have made it worse.

Matt, I was referring to the C-97-style wheel that has no open spokes. Both '927 and FIFI have these installed now, I was just curious when the switch from the spoked style was made. Here is what I meant:

Sorry if my description was imprecise.

That's it for now - I'll see if I can find anything else worth posting in a few weeks.
