Re: Ok I have to ask who saw Red Tails

I didn't like how the movie portrayed the bomber crews as frightful and incapable aviators while it portrayed the german fighter pilots as incompetents. I'm not going to be buying this one, much less get it through Red Box to watch. I was disappointed with the movie.

After all the "hoo-ha" about how bad "Red Tails" was we figured we needed to see it. I rented it yesterday. When it was over, we looked at each other and said, almost in unison, "Tuskeegee Airmen" was better. The lead in stated "Based on the novel by..." what that really means is,
some of the stuff depicted in the movie, actually happened. From what I could glean from the movie, the only "actual" stuff was that there was a 332nd, they did fly P-51s, were based at Ramitelli, and they were Negroes. Other than that......

It's strange, I watched the 1990 "Memphis Belle" last week, and it wasn't quite as awful as I remembered. Of course I hadn't seen it in 15 years or so, and "Pearl Harbor" and "Red Tails" have come out since then, lowering the realism bar considerably.

I wish we could get a WWII aviation film of the same caliber as "Saving Private Ryan" or "Band of Brothers." I wouldn't even mind if they used a lot of CGI. When it's done well, I don't have a problem with it. Unfortunately the CGI in "Red Tails" was just distractingly obvious and cartoony.

Off topic, but nevermind...anybody seen "The Red Baron"? I think it was made in 2009, and it has high production values, some fair acting, though inevitably a lot of CGI. Lots of real aircraft in taxiing, takeoff and landing scenes, though. (And yes, I did notice the VHF antennas and nav lights...) I came across it by accident and streamed it from Netflix for free the other day. It is VERY loosely based on the story of von Richthofen but is not meant to be a biopic. I enjoyed it, but as a writer, I don't require filmmakers to be literalists.

Yeah, I said it right after I walked out of the theater from seeing Red Tails, that if they could have swapped scripts between the two movies, you'd have had an amazing Tuskeegee movie, and an unwatchable one.
That said, there was an awful lot of clunkiness to the earlier movies, script as well, just not nearly as much.

Honestly the most recent, realistic airplane movie has been Flyboys

Look for yourself...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IksK9GFe ... re=related - part 1. But i recomend you get the movie so you can watch it normally in H.D. :)

As to Red Tails... I have more fun flying IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 every Friday than i did watching this movie... Even my game has more realism! :hide:

I have just had the opportunity to see this film. It was pretty much as I expected, after reading so many comments here and elsewhere. It's not very good, is it.

I do have some questions though. At the Ramatili air base, and also the Luftwaffe air base they attack, why are all the aircraft and buildings butted right up against the runway? And why are dozens of aircraft lined up wingtip to wingtip at both bases. Surely this was not a genuine practice? Even at small temporary airstrips the USAAF must have surely dispersed their aircraft, right? And the living quarters would have been away from the runway for safety's sake? It's just that I listened to a lecture given at the National Museum of the USAF via their podcasts all about the real Tuskagee Airmen, and the speaker made some comparisons to the film, and he reckoned that in the film the Ramatili air base depicted looked pretty close to the real thing. Really?? Are there photos available of the real base taken in WWII?

Also I wonder, has Cuba Gooding Junior ever spoken publicly about being in the film? As he was in both films I wonder if he has made any comparisons.

As for me, I'm just working on a big ol' "I TOLD YOU SO" sign to post on every forum where I took heat for saying the movie was going to be crap as soon as the first trailers came out. Despite that, I'm still going to go see it this weekend.

Thanks Paul (RAMC181), ok so the place did indeed have revetments and no tents on the runway edges. I did note further down in that thread the line ups of P-51's though, but I guess they may have been about to go aloft, rather than parked up.
