As lame as the movie Top Gun seems nowadays I have to admit that it also had an impact on me when I was Freshman in high school. Shortly after the movie came out I was in San Diego visiting relatives and was fortunate enough to get a tour of Miramar Naval Air Station where my uncle was stationed. His job was to service and maintain the F-14's which allowed my brother and I to see them up close and to even sit in the cockpit of one. I still remember him telling me not to grap onto the yellow/black striped ejection handles as I climbed in and out of the cockpit. Of course being a dumb-ass kid at the time I didn't know any better. :roll:

My vote was for The Great Waldo Pepper, 12 O'clock was a great movie but with the EAA not being a Warbird only group I thought it would be a long shot. I haven't seen One Six Right yet.
Top Gun got me more interested in motorcycles than airplanes 8)

One of my favorite lines in the movie,"Usually I'm blabby, but I sat on this one". When being questioned about bombing downtown Hanoi. This event I understand is a true event. No, not the movie, but an A-6 crew bombing Hanoi. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I liked that line to.

Here's the only video I could find of the movie on the net.

Kind of neat that the real "Devil 505" from the movie is being restored at the Yankee Air Museum.

Cool!

You musta liked this movie too, huh mustangdriver?

It is one of my favorites. I was shocked when I went to visit the guys over at Yipsilanti, MI and saw an A-6 fuselage being restored. I walked over to it, and it had the 505 painted on teh nose and the pilot says jake Grafton. I asked around about it, and was told that this was the movie airplane! I hope that when it is finished, that it is painted back in it's movie paint job.

One of my favorite parts in the movie. When the C.O. is down and Grafton and Cole descide to beak the rules again. This time to save their C.O.

"Sir? Arn't they grounded? No, I see a strike prepairing to launch!"

Fri May 04, 2007 9:53 pm

That and after the crash of Grafton's A-6 when the C.O. tells Grafton I thought I grounded you, and he replies with "hey I am on the ground."

You got your facts wrong again bill!

Top Gun" 20.5 percent
Twelve O'Clock High" (17.7 percent)
Memphis Belle from 1990 (12.2 percent).
Battle of Britain" (1969) with 11.8 percent;
"Spirit of St. Louis" (1957) and "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1975), each with 8.6 percent;
"Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965) 7.1 percent;
The Flight of the Phoenix" (1965) 5.2 percent; and
"The High and the Mighty" (1954) with 4.0 percent

I may be little prejudiced as my plane was one of the 2 two seat Spitfires that did the aerial filming for the movie. The other one was flown by Connie Edwards and he had to make a forced landing due to an engine fire. I think The Great Waldo Pepper is my first choice, and then perhaps Midway, BoB.
