what's a PRT??

PRT = Power Recovery Turbine. If I recall correctly from my readings about Constellations (), the R-3350 Turbo-Compund engine has three exhaust-driven turbines that directly drive the crankshaft, as opposed to the traditional turbosupercharger which compresses the air or air/fuel mixture going into the engine. Gary? Am I right on this?

Cheers!

IIRC The PRT turbine wheel is connected by gearing into the accessory section which is connected to the crank and into the prop shaft via the nosecase. I don't know if they directly connect to the crank.

This shows the interconnecting gearing and clutches.

This is from the EngineHistory.org web page featuring some cutaway engines at LSFM.

Hi Gary,
It's the inboard side of the inboard engine. Not that I can see anything  If it was a runaway prop it would have to go through the whole a/c to get to #3 correct?

My thought at first glance was an engine fire.

Jack...I reckon I'm blind as well. I should've paid more attention to the picture before offering my opinions, huh?

k5dh and 51fixer...you're both right...sort of. The PRTs drive the crankshaft, via a set of gears. The gears, however, are not in the nose case, they're behind the power section, just in front of the internal blower.

Those are some great pictures that 51fixer gave us links to, that help explain it.
