Remember the Monogram B-17G?

The Monogram 1/48 kit is still very nice, even by today's standards.

The "junk" kit I was referring to was the ancient 1/72 Revell B-17F. It builds up into a decent-looking Fort, but is basically a toy, with no interior and simplified detail. I probably built two or three when I was a kid. They survived any number of missions and crash landings in the back yard before succumbing to "flak" (AKA firecrackers.)

I agree and a squadron of them were burned and crashed in my youth. It was the box art of the 1/72nd kit that stands out as one of my favorite works of art of all time.

I feel that many of us kept trying to build a model that lived up to the urgency of the box cover.
