Yes, it started life as an "E" but don't forget that the "J" model was a remanufactured "E".

Derek,
150328 was retired to AMARC as NM/201, but was supplied to Cannon for use as a range target, so it is unlikely, although of course not impossible that this is our bird.
As you say, if anyone can make out the modex on the nose it would be very helpful. That said, careful examination of the photos leads me to suspect that we may have a composite, as the star and bar does not seem to match up correctly.
Alternatively, can someone ask the owner (or his son) which aircraft he has?
Regards,
Andy Marden

Good eyes on the mismatched star and bar Andy. Interesting about 150328 going to Cannon. One sure wouldn't think those range birds would make it out of there in any shape or form. Maybe it is just the cockpit section of 150328 and not the entire a/c. I wonder though what the chances are of a composite airframe getting put together from two different a/c from the same squadron??

Argh, this is a difficult one. I hope that someone can ask the owner or his son to see if he knows what the correct BuNo is...

No doubt, but could find no further info beyond its life as an E.

I sure hope this can happen, seemed to be some confusion on who actually owned the airframe early in the post.

Not sure why I must always know which tail the machine I am looking at is, disease I guess.

The truck in the background of that last picture I posted is mine. I was on my way back from picking up some parts and pieces, when I stumbled across the Crusader......

The owner of the Crusader tells me it is an F-8J, if that helps y'all out any.
