Good day all,

Thanks for those posts. I had never realised Palau was so close to the Philippines.

Will be in the Philippines for 3 weeks in December to say hello to my wife family.

Already agreed to spend one week holiday in Palau and that i can have 4 days just for myself looking around Peleliu and angaur for wrecks.

Just be patient, by December you'll know if there is anything left of those B-24/B-25/Corsair and potential Japanese wreck.

I would venture that the amount of "deterioration" was cause be hacking for "scrap" aluminum. I'm surprised that the Navy hasn't already picked up the Corsair...and even if someone did recover her, the Navy would be waiting in and for the wings :axe:

I think this area or particular string of a few of these islands is contested by the phillipine govt. I have great PI contacts in the south and they say there is no way to get in there legally and pull them out.

But, what would any level of government gain from making the removal of those airplanes illegal? I assume the only rational reason would be if the area that the airframes are in are some kind of sacred spiritual site of the local inhabitants. I'm really stretching my imagination and that's all I can come up with.

Given enough money, I'm sure anything can be pulled out of there. Let me reiterate, the point about "enough money."

Even at this point I'd say let the Navy pick her up. Whatever it takes to save whats left of that Corsair. But the B-24's should'nt be forgotten either. I bet if Tallichet knew about them in the 70's, he might have picked them up.

Well, would probably have been true for the Corsair as i do not think there is a lot of surviving Corsair combat vet but not likely for the B-24s asthat there was at that time quite a lot of intact and potentially flyable B-24 available in India. Just have a look at the photos below of the Angaur B-24 in 1973

Yeah, that's pretty bad for 1973. For 2010, though, it's about the best you can hope for! Although I'm sure we all know, they are probably in much worse shape now.
