In general this subject is somewhat tiresome. If you don't like a paint scheme on a particular aircraft the offer to pay for a repaint on the aircraft and make sure you research your position. Short of that, or buying the aircraft outright you don't have many options.

Owners will do what they will with THEIR aircraft.

And besides, if you want authentic paint schemes, shouldn't they use crappy paint that flakes off? I don't know about you but the majority of the pictures I've seen of aircraft in service show the paint scheme in less than pristine shape. Personally I would love to see a "rat rod" looking Mustang that had the appearance of flying 15 mission on its scheme, but that's me

I bet if they had a poll for coolest airplane at the show, this one would get most of the votes from the kids. I bet the guy who owned this one had young kids or grandkids and thought more of what they thought of it than the warbird experts on paint job accuracy. I'd be the same way (but my kids would want Batman). I love the old trainers in yellow and think it's pretty cool. I bet the guy had a pretty good sense of humor and would be pretty fun to talk to.

EXACTLY.....FWIW, after Pearl Harbor, when the Army was converting commercial DC-3s for military service they used......PUSH BROOMS to apply the olive drab paint! I don't think that too many people would really want to see that today....

Easy enough to do...just look at the B17's in Memphis Belle..

restored and looks awful all chromed up and even has a glass panel!!! Who puts a glass instrument panel in a T-28?????

I'm resigned to the fact that I wont ever get the chance to make the decisions about how I'm going to restore and paint my airplane. I commend the folks who take the time to return their warbirds to the airplanes they were when they came off the line.

Given some miracle of money falling out of the sky for me, the dream is always the same. The plane changes now and then, but the outcome is the same. As Twilight Tear was the last warbird I saw up close I'm in love with Mustangs at the moment, and she's a perfect example of what I'd want. I want a time capsule. When a kid climbs into the cockpit I want them to feel like they went back in time.

For me that means no second seat in my P51. I want it as stock as it can be, with gun sight and any other would have been there stuff to make it look as it would have sitting in it's revetment waiting for the next mission. I want the stenciling done, the paint scheme accurate to a specific bird and I want it to represent the memory of a pilot and ground crew.

What it means is the odds of my flying it will be slim to none. But that's OK. If I can ever get to the point of restoring a warbird, it will be enough for me to make sure that anyone seeing it, see's the past.

I, too, have mixed feelings on this subject. I do understand the realities of economics and that some owners may simply not have the resources available to go with an accurate paint scheme and maintain it as well.

On the other hand, if someone was able to purchase the Mona Lisa, put it into their private collection and then paint a handlebar mustache on her, would we all be as quick to say "He bought the painting, he can do whatever he wants with it?". As the years continue to go by, the historical significance of these planes has to start to outweigh the "it's my toy, I can do what I want with it" aspect. As the generation that flew these planes for their intended purpose continue to become fewer and fewer, the historical significance of these planes can only continue to increase. What I don't understand is the black/white nature of this issue. Why do paint schemes have to be 100% accurate or don't even bother painting it all? I think there is room for middle ground: reasonably accurate schemes that are practical for the owner to obtain and maintain.

In a lot of ways, the argument is similar to dealing with classic cars. Personally, I cringe when I see a 60s era muscle car done up with 20-inch wheels. I prefer seeing muscle cars bone stock, especially with painted rims and "dog pan" hubcaps. However, there are some cars that are very tastefully done that are not as offensive. A bone stock restoration may not have been possible in all cases and the "modified" look is the difference between the car being in your driveway versus being in your refrigerator as a beer can.
