I don't think anyone is disputing that it's great a B-17 is flying. We are just talking about the background and history of this aircraft and markings.

I wonder what this will mean for Geneseo this year and our resident B-17 being flown for the crowds by Austin W?

Will she be there and will we be gaining a P-40 that we have not seen before in the NE?

She's become a fixture at Gennie and the crowds will be asking for her I'm sure.

HAGkid any updates???

Mustangdriver, please don't spout off 'facts' about the MBMA/NMUSAF Memphis Belle to Dayton dispute. From someone that was there and involved with it, you have some of it right, and some of it wrong. Please stop presenting everything you have heard about it as fact.

All of my info is from an interview I did on warbird radio with someone very much a part of it then and still a part of it.

I'll just chuck another bit in here.
As far as I am aware, the wartime Mempfis Belle was the only aircraft to wear that name, whereas Southern Belle was apparently worn by more than one aircraft, which could have lead to 'confusion' as to which representative unit the film company would select amongst the different groups who had aircraft bearing this name.
As there was no such issue with choosing and changing the name to Memphis Belle, the jobs a goodun!

At the end of the day, if all the remaining airworthy 17's wore the same scheme so that they could keep flying, then so be it. As it is fortunately not the case, then Happy Days! :supz:

Wish I knew what was going on too! First I heard of this, it was said she was gone for good. Now, I hear that she'll be back from time to time...who knows?! Lol, anyone care to post a summary of the interview?

I am in the minority in that I understand why the folks in Memphis made a big deal about Tallichet's plane with markings of a veteran B-17 that still existed and the confusion that surely came from the public over people coming to Mud Island, saying, "Nah, the real one was over in Kansas flying around last weekend, I saw it..." [/img]

I see you restored a WW2 Jeep, I guess the Patton museum of Armour could equally be upset about all the Command Cars dotted around the US in his markings too :D :D ?

Nevermind, I just listened to the interview, very exciting stuff! I'm psyched for the Liberty Foundation, the 'Belle will serve them nicely. 8)

I wonder what TX Raiders, Yankee Lady or Chuckie is doing Geneseo weekend July 13/14/15?

Austin has HAG made any motions toward looking for another 17 for the show? I saw you have the CWH Lancaster booked!!!

Awesome news! Do we get the P-40 too?? After all it was built just down the road. I know we have AAM's listed but it would be cool to see the LF's.

They actually aren't happy about that, in fact, but I guess they can't copyright simple vehicle markings. Frankly, I think it's silly that people feel they have to make their jeep/truck/B-17 into a copy of a famous one, as if having one at all isn't cool enough. My WW2 Jeep is painted like a normal one, no nose art or markings for a famous one. In fact, it's marked as a rear-echelon command one.

If thats the case you might want to edit your website. I see your Jeep has jeanette painted over the wheel arch like Mauldins. And you refer to re-painting your Jeep to match his anyway.....

I'm still toying around with stripping the hood and starting over on those markings. I have some good photos of Bill Mauldin's Jeep that was "issued" to him in 1944, and I'm seriously considering painting my hood with the exact same numbers...

You really need to read more carefully before you post. The name on my Jeep is not Jeanie (which was Mauldin's first wife), it's on the opposite side of the vehicle, is painted in a different typeface, and - oh yeah- it's a totally different name (which you mispelled, by the way, that's my wife's name, which has the French spelling)
Yes, I did write that I might paint my Jeep like Mauldin's, but the difference is I HAVE PERMISSION from Mauldin's family to do so if I wish to someday! It'd never cross my mind to do without said permission as I've written extensively on Mauldin's life and work and consulted some museums and archives and done TV appearances talking about his life.
