Or maybe they could have Jack Roush fly one of his Mustangs over it

Speaking of Mustangs, which NASCAR driver from Decades ago like in the previous Century, had a P-51? I recall he was checking out the back stretch of one race track to see if he could land his P-51 on it. I know I'm not nuts.....er...At least I don't think so...

While there are several current/former NASCAR drivers that are pilots - Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace and others the only one that I know associated with NASCAR is Jack Roush - coowner of Roush Fenway Racing (Biffle, Stenhouse Jr, Bayne, Edwards) owns 2 P-51 Mustangs - a P-51B named Old Crow and a P-51D named Gentleman Jim. He used to own a P-51D named Old Crow, but that was sold a few years back. Gentleman Jim used to be called Glamorous Glen, but after an issue with Yeager he changed the name.

Seriously though, we (and yes I am Canadian) might fly some jets over the Grey Cup but not over every auto race or college football game of any significance (if we had any). I have read that that the U.S. military flyovers run into the thousands each year. Do ours? We do not feel that no major public event is complete without military presence.

Or do we? Maybe I overestimate my fellow Canadians.

What this thread comes down to is, the OP thinks that a reduced military aviation showing at public events due to budget cuts is bad. I think it's neutral, maybe good.

But I'm with Tom in that I'm all for warbirds getting more exposure if they can take up the slack. Whatever feeds the old birds is okay by me!

Morning

My point was more toward the poster who made the "totalitarian" and "militaristic" comments than anything else.

That said the Royal Canadian Air Force has been very good in supporting many events with flyovers.
CFL football games (more than just the Grey Cup), major auto races and major outdoor sporting events, parades, Canada Day celebrations and others.

All that said it has to be balanced with dollars. As I understand it, from friends in past command positions, its built into required flying hours...they have to do the hours one way or another to keep current...might as well ask for someone that wants to use theirs to do the event.

Ether way they need to turn their budget money into noise and doing a flyover at an event also gives great value for recruiting, community support and inspiration/patriotism to the young folks (and children of all ages 2-102 lol)

So "old" weapons poking out of it is ok? A P-51 is good, but a F-15 is bad? What about a C-17 (no weapons)?

If people are so concerned from an attack from above, I found a $9200 solution! 8)

Then there was the 2011 Super Bowl flyover. Over a domed stadium. $450,000.

Is that article accurate?

I think it was Rusty Wallace that was mentioned on the broadcast, thanks for jogging my memory(be that as it may)

That would be John Rutherford. He owned two mustangs P-51D 44-74497 N6320T(now TF-51 N51LW Little Witch) back in mid 70's and P-51D 45-11558 N6175C (now N514DK ex"Healer") in the late 70's.

Charlie - is it possible for a Mod to change the subject title of a thread? If all discussions remotely related to Sequestration and the impact on military flyovers, air shows, etc. are to be in this thread, something like a generic title such as Sequestration and the impact on Military flying, or something along those lines would seem to make more sense. Just a thought.

The AZ Wing of the CAF is doing a flyover of the NASCAR race in PHX today. Not sure if Fifi is joining them.

I had been silently hoping for FiFi to join SJ and maybe the P-51's that are along for the tour, but it's not to be.

However, I have it on good authority that the flyover for the Spring race in Texas will be spectacular (i.e. Eddie Gossage tweeted it would be :) ), so expect to see at least one of the locally based Warbirds making a grand flyover at the first Wild Asphalt Circus of the year. :)

Oh yeah, and once again, the President does something and the unintended consequences backfire on him. He's unintentionally boosted the funding for many warbird operators for the rest of the year as the sporting events scramble to keep flyovers going. With luck, the lost revenue from airshow appearances will be more than offset by the flyover appearances.

It just proved the adage, 'when one door closes, another opens' besides, I think dozens of rumbling cylinders does a better job of setting the tone for the 32000 horsepower coming than a turbine engine, and the thumping your chest gets and making your guts churn on the parade laps and first couple race laps is hard to beat.
