This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

The bottom line is this - We need all the support we can muster from individuals, organizations, corporations and government officials or these aircraft might be lost to another country. These aircraft were built by our parents and grandparents during a time when everyone sacrificed for this country's freedom. We want to Bring 'Em Home where they belong. Please spread the word and become a part of this history saving endeavour.
Thank you for your interest.

Lets remember that up until 1961 the planes were on top of the ice. So that means in 25 years not 61 the planes were covered up by 268' of snow and ice. I hope that is more ammunition for the naysayers in the world. Just remember the words of Norman Vaughn ( you all know who he is right? ) you have not failed until you give up. And you can't fail if you don't try. So lets all get our facts and figures correct and then all sit at home to see if someone else can do it. I haven't been to the site for awhile sorry I haven't been here to answer all these questions but I have been very busy. WE ARE going to get these planes and BRING 'EM HOME. JOE MEYERS

I did a search and found this thread. Does anyone on here have any personal knowledge of these folks? Someone mentioned talking to them at Oshkosh.
I'd really like to support this effort, but I want to make sure that there is a plan and the ability to back the plan up before I write any checks.

I figured out the next WIX field trip! :D
Everybody bring a shovel and some warm clothes.
Theres always talk about the P-38's from the Lost Squadron. Mainly because one of them was actually restored. But it seems that the 17's dont get as much spotlight. Maybe its because there feeling a little flat.
I'm trying to remember the two names of the B-17's but, for some reason, just cant. Anyways, is it actually conciveable to say that one of these B-17's could be made "whole"? Or even flying maybe?! :D
Also, wasnt only one of the B-17's actually dug down to? Even still, I 'm sure most of the wreckage proabably could be valuable and could find its way into useful hands. This makes me wonder, if possibility the second Fortress might have fared better?
Wishful thginking.
I wish them luck as well.

The Fortress' were found first and and fair worse than the P-38s. They were completely crushed.

Yes the B-17's will resemble pancakes.Gold plated pancakes.Did you guy's not see the pathetic remains of the B-17 E model that they pulled out of that field/forest and are now restoring? The outer skin isnt the important part. Its all of the attached castings, forgings, machined bits that matter and I'll bet that they have done pretty well for the most part. They need to blast the ice for the first 200 or so feet and then aim 400 hair blow driers at the ice to melt the last few feet.Yep, they needed to consult with me.I think"out of the box!" yep,"uh huh" "taters and mustard taste real good.Uh huh"

The 17 that was pulled out of the woods was in fantastic shape compared to the ones in the ice cap.The steel carry thrus were pulled in half. The structure was destroyed and what it would yield towards a rebuild verses the cost to recover just is not worth it.Take the same money that you would spend on digging the planes out and start building a new one.Its what you'll end up with anyway just like glacies girl.
