RickH,
Apologies for the slow response Rick, I had a "situation" requiring my attention...

Quote:
Deep water in Dickinson Bay ? That's kind of an oximoron unless you are in the middle of the channel, isn't it ?

True, Dick Bay is only about 10-15 feet deep on average and deepest is
the channel. Galveston Bay averages 12 feet in depth, with exception to
the Ship Channel, so deep is a relative term.

The waters are cooling ? Day temps are still in the 90s !

Day temps may be 90's at that slab of concrete we call Ellington, but it's been
cooler here with breezes over the Bay. Nights, lately temps have been in the 60's/70's,
coupled with shorter days, produces a cooling effect. Compared to the 80's/90's
water temps we have in August, these mini-cool fronts make a difference
over time. April Fool Point, where the Specks are bit'n, water temp at the shore there is 74 degrees, currently.
The temp at my dock is....(Here's where the "situation" comes in to play...)

Rick, at this point I should've been satisfied with my explanation of the
relative term "cool"...but I couldn't let it go at that. If I'm gonna be saddled
with the responsibility of "THE" WIX fishing report..it's gotta be accurate!
I couldn't find what my local water temp was on the web yesterday, so I
says, "bugawd I'll just go take the GBay temp muself"!

I walked over to the shoreline, thermometer in hand, and gingerly amble
down the rip-rap barefooted and in shorts, to the waters edge. I select
a 2x12 crossmember to lean on and proceed to take my temps. Of course,
some bonehead in the past didn't use galvanized nails in placing the X-member,
so the sucker lets go. WTF!!! My ar$e is about a foot and a half above sea
level and my face is about 2 foot below sea level, and luckily in the sand.
I dunno why...but I'm alternatively cussing the very existence of RickH and
laughing at the same. (gurgle..gurgle..*%$#&**%..Doubting Thomas...gurgle..  ..
gurgle..Mother Tucker this hurts..gurgle.. ) I managed to extricate myself
from the "situation" as delicately as possible, but to no avail. At this point,
I'm a sopping wet ..barnacle and oyster-shell lacerated bleeding mess! Elbows,
knees, hands and toes..I won't be wearing my boots for awhile. I look like
some kinda Betadine spotted Ocelot who's emerged from a towsack of
angry alley cats...ohhh..the shame....

SO! I hope ya'll enjoyed the 1st, Ohhficial WIX Galveston Bay Fishing Report!!
I don't believe there will be any more!!!

PS..The temp at my dock, yesterday at 11am CST was 79.5 F..definately
cooler than it was in August!
..............................................................................................................
Tom Crawford!! Catch some fish!!!
.............................................................................................................
Back to Vulcans!!!
Why are Snapper's fishing reports so much less..umm..dangerous??

Nicely done ! Thanks for the effort and subsequent entertainment !

BTW my existence has been cussed before ! It doesn't hurt at all. Course I wasn't the one walking up barnacled rip rap with NO SHOES ! ( Are you NUTZ ?) Great thing to do with the dreaded flesh eating bacteria lurking about though the new low water temps should keep them at bay. ( no pun intended )

Now does anyone here remember when a Vulcan showed up at an Ellington AFB open house and did a veeerrryyy spirited low level demo ?

Won't soon forget the tailend sight of four afterburners lit up !

That must have been a sight! Perhaps they fitted Concorde's engines by mistake the last time they serviced that particular Vulcan?

OK, Mike, apparently I screwed that one up ! It is a furrin airplane and I only seed it once, over 25 years ago ! I must have it confused with lookin up the tailpipe of a B-1.

I do know that when he did a steep turn away from us that he blooted out a lot of sky ! We had a low grey ceiling that year and he flew a very impressive low show, lot of fast passes and steep turns. Oh, and lots of NOISE !!

Well, I was going to guess about 1970 or 82(Falklands period). Since you
dated Vulcan's appearance at more than 25yrs..'twould probably be closer
to the latter for your Ellington show.

I saw a Vulcan perform at Dulles, IIRC, 1970 or '71. Impressive low show
indeed, but we had a nice sunny day in my case. Any photos or brochures
I had were washed away in a flood while I was in the Navy. I think a Victor
was there, as well as B-70 and saw my first real-life C-5A. I need to start
a Dulles Airshow 1970 thread, hoping to jog someones memory in order
to kickstart mine! The B-70 may have been a Carswell show..dern CRS...

Glad to oblige you,Suh...I have been accused of throwing myself into my work!

I have steps descending to the waters edge made up of unbarnacled rip-rap..
when the X-member let go, I was vaulted into the barnacle stuff and subsequent misery.
I've made the trip dozens of times over the years without incident. I'm Nutz,
not ign'ernt! :)

True Rick, my system is full of antibiotics and I'm hoping this helps. 7 days
ago I recieved 2 spider bites which evidently had staph..nonetheless keeping
a close eye on the situation. These things happen occasionly when one
prefers to live and work in or near nature. An office, tho safe, would drive
me stircrazy. I'll take the elements and dusty barns and sheds anyday.

Flesh Eating Bacteria tho, is a concern in temps above 73 degrees. The day
I was on the way to the doctor when it appeared the bites were not responding
to Neosporin, I met a gent who had slipped and scuffed his knee on his porch.
He went to the doc..went on antbiotics, but didn't monitor his situation
closely enough...turned out he had FEB. Hideous results! It ate half of
the epidermis from his calf to hip. Gruesome. Be careful folks! This stuff
can get you while fishing, walking your porch or working on your airplane!

The doctors tell me Neosporin is fine for initial antibacterial treatment, but
they gave me a Silvadene(prescription) ointment which was successful,
along with antibiotics, in defeating the staph sores..got one left about the
size of a dime(bite #1 got silver dollar size in 2 days!!)

END OF PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Sorry for hijacking the Vulcan thread, yet again, but I just wanted to remind you good folks, this stuff is a real concern! Be Safe!!
