This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Photo circa 1987

Which makes the incident all the more painfull since I grew up in Livermore and saw Bob and Jolly Roger all the time.
P.S. Rick, was this photo taken at a Hamilton AFB show with Russ flying?

The photo was taken at the 1987 Hamilton "Wings of Victory" Airshow and it is Russ Francis in the pilot seat.
I cringed when I saw the video. I spent a bit of time at Livermore during the early 80's and had a few opportunites to talk with Bob in his hangar. I never got to fly in the airplane but flew alongside it in Jack Hovey's Mustang while my brother was in Bob's. About a year ago I stopped by the hangar in Galt where the plane is now and it was on jacks with the engine removed. I don't know what the current status of the plane is.

Is Arnold Palmer famous? If he is, he has owned several Citations. His newest one, I believe has a serial number ending with "001". You would have to have some kind of celebrity (or money) and probably both, to get No. 1 off the production line....

You just have to put up money early and be willing to put up with lots and lots of little glitches if you want sn1 of anything.

Arnold Palmer????
He has been selling Lear Jets, etc since they were started in the early 60s. He may well have been the first Lear jet dealer in America (or Clay Lacy one of the two was). He is in a unique position to use his celebrity to sell expensive things. Of course as we all know Lee Lauderback used to fly for him.
I'll place a bet her that the number N1AP has been on more bizjets than any other registration in history.

I have never heard of half the 'famous' people mentioned here.
And some of the aircraft mentioned I wouldn't count as warbirds.
I'm surprised that film director Peter Jackson hasn't been mentioned yet, he has a very impressive collection of genuine and replica WWI aircraft.
I recently saw a programme on TV where Gary Neuman said he'd sold all his planes. I think this show was made last year.

N3278D was owned by a footballer named Wayne Meylan. He perished in the crash of the 51.

I think the problem is that the definition of the word "famous" as it applies to this thread. There's Hollywood famous, Aviation Famous, Sports Famous, Politic Fame etc.
There are even fields of life where some one is incredibly famous, but only among a small group of similarly minded individuals, such as in the sciences.
I think the liberal interpretation of the word for this thread would be something along the lines of "well known" by the "General Public" for what ever they are known for doing.
As far as Peter Jackson goes, I can't believe I forgot him, and I just looked at the Omaka website last week!!!!

I seem to remember that a former assistant secretary of the Navy, Melvin Paisley owned P-51D N511D in the 1960s.

I wouldn't want Tom Cruise to fly a warbird it would be to dangerous. I heard that he tried to land his private jet at the Army Ammunitions plant after a few weeks after sept 11th over here in Mcalester OK completely missing the Airport and then dumped his fuel somewhere in town and never landed. They thought it was another terrorist attack, but instead it was Tom mistaking the army base as the airport.
